Philanthropist donates $48M to Australia wildfire relief efforts
A philanthropic businessman has donated $48 Million in aid to help combat the effects of the Australian wildfires. His contribution makes Andrew Forrest the single biggest donor in the relief efforts to date.
Forrest is the founder and chair of the Minderoo Foundation – an Australian philanthropic organization.
Born and raised in Australia, the cause is near and dear to Forrest’s heart. He has spent time on the ground with those affected, and on Tuesday, he shared those experiences with CBS12’s Lexi Nahl.
Today, the wildfires continue to tear through Australia — deadly smoke and flames devastating thousands of homes and leaving 28 people dead.
There is still no end in sight to the crisis, so there is no telling just how severe the environmental impact will be, but the fires have already destroyed several parks, forests, and killed thousands of animals across the region.
“Certainly, I’ve seen nothing like the furious danger of these fires,” Forrest said in an interview with CBS12 News.
Of his $48M donation, Forrest plans to reserve $10M for immediate emergency relief, including funding a volunteer army to help with first aid and crisis management among other things.
“We are putting the army together,” Forrest said. “We have nearly 1,000 now, but we’re reaching out across Australia and we need to mobilize them to where they’re needed most.”
Forrest plans to put another $10M towards community rebuilding, and the remainder – the largest chunk of the donation – will go towards long term relief efforts to prevent future disasters like this one.
