S&P Dow Jones Indices’ decision keeps Egypt in the Emerging Market category, reinforcing efforts to build a more resilient, accessible and investment-ready capital market.

Boost for market confidence:

S&P Dow Jones Indices has decided to keep Egypt’s equities classified as an Emerging Market following its 2026 consultation, dropping a proposal to move the market to Frontier status.

The decision comes as Egypt continues to modernize its capital market through regulatory, technological and structural reforms designed to improve market access, transparency and liquidity.

Egyptian Exchange Chairman Omar Radwan said the outcome reflects the country’s accelerated efforts to improve the investment climate and demonstrates the resilience of the Egyptian economy in the face of regional and global challenges.

Reforms reshape the market:

Recent measures include launching a derivatives market, activating short selling, expanding digital transformation and upgrading the market’s technological infrastructure. The Exchange has also introduced new products and services while working to improve trading mechanisms and market liquidity.

Radwan said the reform agenda goes beyond maintaining Egypt’s current classification, with the longer-term goal of strengthening the market and positioning it for more advanced classifications in the future.

Laying ground for sustainable growth:

Maintaining Emerging Market status could help strengthen international investor confidence and support Egypt’s efforts to attract foreign capital.

The reforms are also laying the foundations for a more transparent, efficient and digitally enabled capital market, supporting broader access to investment and more sustainable long-term market development.

Egypt’s EGX30 benchmark has gained more than 30% since the start of 2026, despite regional geopolitical pressures, according to the Egyptian Exchange.
