Google-backed Texas e-truck project targets 92,000-ton emissions cut

A new electric trucking project backed by Google is expected to cut an estimated 92,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions, as 63 battery-electric semi trucks are deployed on freight routes in Texas.

25 trucks on the road:

Google is partnering with Nevoya and the Center for Green Market Activation (GMA) to deploy 25 electric Class 8 semi trucks and the charging infrastructure needed to operate a new all-electric route between Houston and Dallas.

The 25 trucks are part of a wider 63-truck project, described as the largest known deployment of Class 8 battery-electric zero-emission trucks in Texas.

11mln miles, lower emissions:

The trucks are expected to travel about 11 million miles annually and reduce emissions by an estimated 92,000 metric tons of CO2e over the length of the contracts, compared with conventional diesel trucks.

Google will receive the project’s environmental benefits through environmental attribute certificates (EACs), which companies can use to address logistics-related emissions across their supply chains.

Scaling electric freight:

Google said pooling its EAC procurement with other companies can create a stronger demand signal for zero-emission freight technologies.

The approach is designed to help expand the market for electric trucking while accelerating the shift toward lower-emission freight transportation.
