IFAD official: We are working with Egypt, regional countries to address water challenges
Zeinab Awad, the Country Program Coordinator of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Egypt Office, said IFAD is working with Egypt and other regional countries to address water challenges.
She noted that IFAD has been working over the past two decades on managing its own resources.
She made the remarks during the 6th Forum on Strategies for Transition to Green Economy that kicked off earlier Monday.
She said IFAD is working through several axes, including integrating innovative mechanisms and using solar energy to change the irrigation system in Egypt into modern methods and shift to drip irrigation.
IFAD also seeks integrating innovative mechanisms to develop market and support farmers and all those working in the agricultural sector, Awad said.
Awad pointed out that IFAD promotes rural development through offering expertise and needed assistance to support smallholder farmers in many African, Asian and Latin American countries.
She noted that smallholder farmers are the main food producers worldwide as they provide 60 to 80 percent of the food produced in developing countries.
Amid growing world population, these farmers are under increasing pressure to up their productivity and ensure food security, especially for the poor people in rural communities, she said.
Awad explained that there are many factors that make agriculture more difficult for them, including climate change, water scarcity, land degradation, and high levels of post-harvest food losses.
She underlined the importance of developing sustainable agriculture via different different systems and support small farmers and link them to local and international markets.
She also called for building partnerships among different parties to support small farmers in addition to partnerships in scientific research.
She added that there should be partnerships with national , international, legislative executive and banking institutions.
Strengthening such partnerships ensures faster success and achieves greener future, she accentuated.
For her part, Mona El-Bardaei, Chief Marketing Officer at Mahaseel Company, stressed that all parties should unite to achieve sustainable agriculture and develop the quality of Egyptian products in order to export them and be able to join the competition.
