Over 5,000 Egyptian youths from various governorates participated in a large marathon organized on the World Bicycle Day – on June 3 – which aims to draw attention to the benefits of using the bicycle — a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.
The use of bicycle contributes to cleaner air and less congestion and makes education, health care and other social services more accessible to the most vulnerable populations. A sustainable transport system that promotes economic growth, reduces inequalities while bolstering the fight against climate change is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Youth and Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi led the marathon which was held in the New Administrative Capital (NAC) – which is located between the Cairo-Suez and Cairo-Ain Sokhna roads, 60 km east of downtown Cairo.
Youths from Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Port Said, Ismailia, Suez and Gharbiya governorates toured the NAC streets to see the Iconic Tower which is a supertall skyscraper in the new capital, Egypt’s Islamic Cultural Center and the government district.
Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel Aal – who participated in the marathon lauded the efforts exerted by the Youth and Sports Ministry and its keenness on holding sports events to encourage all social segments to practice sports, maintain their physical fitness and protect public health.
He highlighted the political leadership’s interest in encouraging practicing sports and supporting talented athletes of various sports games.
Promoting the use of bikes serves the Sustainable Development Goals as it contributes to strengthening physical and mental health and well-being and developing a culture of cycling in society.
It also represents a sustainable transport system that promotes economic growth, reduces inequalities while bolstering the fight against climate change.
