The National Bank of Egypt (NBE) and Arab African International Bank (AAIB) have each pledged EGP 10 million to support the presidential “Greening Cairo” initiative, Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber announced.
The contributions follow a call by Cairo Governorate on civil society institutions to support tree planting and expand green spaces across the capital.
Saber praised the banks’ contributions, describing them as a model of partnership between executive authorities and the banking sector in supporting environmental initiatives and improving quality of life.
Scientifically designed afforestation plan:
The initiative will be implemented through a scientifically designed plan involving specialists to select tree species suited to Egypt’s climate, with priority given to shade-providing varieties that require limited water.
The plan will focus on major roads, streets and squares, while encouraging citizens, shop owners and property holders to participate in planting and maintaining trees.
Expanding green spaces:
Cairo Governorate will survey unused plots for potential conversion into parks and green areas, prioritizing densely populated neighborhoods with limited green spaces.
Saber said modern irrigation systems and treated water would be used to ensure the sustainable maintenance of trees and parks, stressing that protecting green spaces is a shared responsibility between citizens and executive authorities.
