Google has introduced an evaluation framework to assess the safety, accuracy, and usefulness of artificial intelligence (AI) models in healthcare, aiming to support the development of tools that people can trust.

The framework is detailed in a whitepaper published in collaboration with health experts Dr. Elizabeth McGlynn and Dr. Dana Gelb Safran. It outlines an end-to-end approach to evaluating AI applications designed to address people’s health needs.

Three evaluation pillars:

The framework assesses AI models across three areas: accuracy, safety, and usefulness. It combines closed-question benchmarks, automated evaluators, and expert human reviews to assess performance across common and high-risk health scenarios.

Promoting transparency:

Google said it developed the framework to evaluate whether its models deliver useful, accurate responses while promoting safe interactions in healthcare contexts.

By making its methodology publicly available, the company aims to promote transparency in healthcare AI evaluation and support developers, researchers, and clinicians in building AI tools that people can trust.
