Nasr Petroleum has inaugurated a 1.2-megawatt (MW) solar power plant at its Suez facilities, expected to reduce electricity consumption from the national grid by around 2,628 megawatt-hours (MWh) annually.

The plant comprises 10 solar canopies installed over the company’s parking area, using available space to generate clean electricity and meet part of its power needs.

Cutting energy costs, emissions:

Nasr Petroleum Chairman Rashad Nazim said the project aims to improve operational efficiency, reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and lower long-term operating costs.

He added that it supports the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources’ strategy to expand solar power installations across petroleum and mining facilities and company administrative headquarters, reducing fuel consumption, energy costs and carbon emissions.

Expanding solar power across petroleum sector:

Between July 2024 and September 2026, the petroleum sector implemented 36 solar projects across its companies and facilities, with a combined capacity of 5 MW. These projects are expected to save around 680,000 liters of diesel and 14 million cubic feet of natural gas annually.

The sector plans to implement another 51 solar projects in the coming period.

It also completed 125 energy-efficiency initiatives during the same period, cutting carbon emissions by around 768,000 tons, with preparations underway for 77 additional projects and initiatives.

Other measures include using flare gas to generate electricity instead of burning it and improving energy efficiency across petroleum sector facilities.
