Artistic shows by Egypt , four other African states to promote climate justice

Egypt and four other African countries – Nigeria, South Africa and Mozambique – will present creative artistic shows as of September 2022 to promote climate justice within the framework of WE!ARE campaign which was launched by the pan-African social agency, Crtve DEVELOPMENT (CD).

The campaign is meant to build a pan-African voice on climate justice ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Summit (COP 27) which Egypt will host in November 2022.

Egypt will highlight Alexandria Sea pollution and coast erosion through a photography exhibition in the Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria, Egypt. Music and singing will be integrated with storytelling to review the environmental impact on human life.

The WE!ARE campaign aims to inspire young people across Africa to share their vision of the continent they want to see and voice the climate justice demands of their communities through creative mediums.
Dr Okito Wedi, Founder and CEO of Crtve DEVELOPMENT, said “Collectively, the ultimate goal of the WE!ARE movement is to socialize climate justice in Africa, using creativity as a means to understand the youths’ demands for mitigation and adaptation in their communities.”

With the COP27 convening in Egypt, the agency believes there has never been a better time for the continent to raise its voice in the climate discourse. This, it explained, is because Africa is the hardest-hit continent by the global climate crisis, despite contributing the least to climate change.

“Africa is the least responsible for climate change but is among the first and worst to suffer. For too long, the story of climate change has been written by western countries. The solutions that have been proposed for climate change have mainly taken into account people living in places like Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, the US, Australia and New Zealand. We need local solutions to local climate change problems,” the agency stated.

The campaign is championed by emerging and established creatives, policymakers, designers, visual artists, auditory artists and community leaders across Africa.
