Mohieldin: Egypt adopted two unprecedented climate action initiatives
By Marwa Nassar - -

United Nations Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt (COP27) Mahmoud Mohieldin said Egypt has adopted two unprecedented initiatives that underscore the importance of local and regional aspects of climate action and contribute to the international efforts to achieve climate goals.

During an interview late Monday with “From Egypt” TV show on CBC Egypt, Mohieldin said the initiative on holding five regional forums was launched by Egypt in tandem with climate champions and Regional Economic Commissions of the United Nations.

The initiative is meant to stand on the priorities and preparedness of countries of each of the five regions to contribute to confronting climate change and climate projects in view of their needs and financing means, he expounded.

He added that the initiative is meant to sensitize to climate-related priorities and conditions in developing countries and emerging markets as well as means of financing climate action in view of each country’s conditions.

He noted that regional efforts promote international efforts in the face of climate change.

He said there are differences in the priorities of developed and developing states with regard to climate action, expounding that developed states aim at cutting carbon emissions and alleviating climate change impact.

He added that developing states seek to find ways to secure funds and inject investments to contribute to curbing climate change in a way that does not contradict economic growth.

Mohieldin said the smart green projects initiative – that was launched by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli over the past few days – represents a marathon for the best 18 projects – that are most sustainable – to be implemented at the local level.

He highlighted that this initiative is unprecedented at the level of countries that have previously hosted the climate conference.
