Dina El-Kayaly: Egypt generates 100 mln tons of waste annually
By Marwa Nassar - -

Dina El-Kayaly, Principal Consultant at CSR Arabia, said Egypt generates around 100 million tons of waste annually, representing significant investment potential in waste management and recycling, as well as opportunities to turn waste into valuable resources and revenue streams.

Speaking at the fourth session, titled “Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency: How Can the Circular Economy Become a Profitability Model for Companies?”, at Egypt Sustainable Business Week, El-Kayaly outlined how circular business models can cut costs, diversify revenue and strengthen corporate competitiveness through more efficient resource use and recycling.

Beyond waste management:

El-Kayaly said the circular economy goes beyond waste management and recycling to rethink how resources are used across production and commercial activities, reducing reliance on virgin raw materials and maximizing the use of existing resources.

She added that recycling can help businesses cut operating and raw material costs, tap new markets and revenue streams, and strengthen supply chain resilience while reducing exposure to raw material price volatility and market uncertainty.

Egypt’s waste sector holds untapped potential:

El-Kayaly said Egypt’s municipal solid waste recycling rate reached 37% by end-2024, up from 10% in 2018, with a target of 60% by 2027.

She noted that the waste management market remains largely untapped, with current activities concentrated in limited geographic areas and waste categories, leaving room for investment in recycling and the recovery of a broader range of waste streams.

Reliable data key to unlocking investment:

El-Kayaly stressed the need for updated, reliable data on waste types and volumes to assess market potential, identify investment opportunities, and support informed business and investment decisions.
