Xan Northcott, the Program Working Group Coordinator for the 16th UN Climate Conference of Youth, said the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) – due to be held in Sharm El Sheikh this year – would be significantly important.
He said few achievements have been made last year in Glasgow, but still global action on climate change has to be taken.
“We have to get to go to the phase of implementation..We really need to see significant progress made,” he stressed.
“There is a lot of pressure on the COP27 this year,” he said, urging young people to get engaged and make the utmost benefit of this opportunity.
Northcott made the remarks on Monday during his virtual participation in the 4th Forum on Strategies for Transition to Green Economy that kicked off in Cairo under the theme of “From Vision to Implementation.” The event is organized by CSR Egypt.
He cautioned that “We know very clearly from the science that climate change is going to make natural disasters more frequently and with more intensity to the point that 50 years from now, we are expected to see a significant climate disaster every single year.”
“How can you possibly have a successful economy if you are having a disaster every year,” Northcott wondered.
He expounded that the impact of these disasters can be destroying houses and causing hunger and drought.
“It is a huge challenge to the economy,” he stressed, urging to engage people in these issues.
