Fayyoum University will be the first university in Egypt to witness the launch of the bike-sharing project in March, Fayyoum Governor said.
The project was first piloted inside the university campus where 100 bikes were used with four bike sharing stations.
Fayyoum University has launched the first stage of the project in the presence of Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad, Youth Minister Ashraf Sobhi and Fayyoum governor Ahmed el Ansari.
Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Egypt Randa Aboul-Hosn also marked the event.
Fouad said the project is the first of its kind in Egypt and its cost stands at about $ 900,000.
She noted that the project is part of the Sustainable Transport Project being implemented by the Environment Ministry in tandem with the UNDP, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Dutch government.
She said the first stage of project is meant to get students living in the university’s dormitory to use bikes to reach the university campus.
Three bike sharing stations will be established at the university’s dormitory, while there will be five stations inside the university campus.
The second stage includes establishing four stations in downtown to help students move from the dormitory to downtown and vice versa.
Meanwhile, Fouad noted that the Sustainable Transport Project is one of the most promising sustainable development projects that would help improve Egyptians health and curb climate change.
The project goal is to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of the transport sector in Egypt, while simultaneously mitigating the local environmental and other problems of increasing traffic such as deteriorated urban air quality and congestion.
This can be achieved by increasing or sustaining the model share of greenhouse gas emission reducing public and non-motorized transportation options, discouraging the use of private cars and facilitating freight transportation by more energy efficient truck operations and increasing the share of cargo transported on rail and inland waterways.
