Egypt has delivered 20 electric buses to the Ministry of Transport for operation on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along the Ring Road, as part of the Greater Cairo Air Pollution and Climate Change Management Project, in cooperation with MCV and the World Bank.
Local Development and Environment Minister Manal Awad said the move supports the state’s efforts to improve public transport services while reducing emissions and improving air quality, providing citizens with a modern, cleaner and more efficient mode of transport.
Awad said introducing electric buses into the public transport system represents a practical step toward turning Egypt’s environmental, climate and sustainable development goals into projects and services that directly benefit citizens.
The World Bank-financed project supports initiatives aimed at reducing emissions and improving quality of life, she said, adding that the BRT system represents a major step in upgrading public transport services.
The electric buses will help reduce reliance on fossil-fuel-powered transport and cut related pollution, Awad said, noting that their deployment reflects Egypt’s efforts to expand sustainable transport solutions with environmental, economic and social benefits.
Mohamed Hassan, National Coordinator of the Greater Cairo Air Pollution and Climate Change Management Project, said the buses were delivered under the project’s third component, which focuses on supporting the shift toward low-emission transport and improving air quality across Greater Cairo.
The project also includes technical capacity-building for the operation and maintenance of electric buses through specialized training programs implemented in cooperation with MCV, ensuring sustainable operations and maximizing the benefits of electric transport, Hassan said.
The buses were equipped according to international technical standards and tailored to the requirements of BRT operations, Hassan said, adding that they are designed to provide high levels of operational efficiency, safety and reliability.
The project continues to coordinate with relevant stakeholders to support Egypt’s transition toward a low-emission economy and advance sustainable development goals.
The delivery reflects cooperation between the ministries of Local Development and Environment and Transport, development partners and the private sector, highlighting a coordinated approach to expanding sustainable transport in Greater Cairo.
