Beni Suef mother shares her experience of benefiting of sessions of Literate Village Project
A devoted mother from the Upper Egypt governorate of Beni Suef, Soaad Moustafa, decided to share her experience of benefiting of women empowerment and parent awareness sessions held within the framework of the Literate Village project. She highlighted the profound impact of the sessions on her life, her self-confidence and the way she is bringing up her children.
The sessions helped her to notice that her daughter needs to build her self-confidence, she said, adding that she stopped yelling at her children and came to listen to them. She became aware of the importance of reading for children, adding her children became more vocal, proactive, and self-assured.
Soad Moustafa is one of hundreds of facilitators for parent awareness sessions offered by the Literate Village project funded by USAID and implemented by Save the Children and partners – that aim to raise mothers’ understanding of their role in their children’s literacy development outside school and to offer them concrete suggestions for practice at home between sessions. The Literate Village project aims to provide community-led adult literacy classes to increase mothers’ ability to contribute to their children’s primary education and foster a culture of lifelong learning and self-improvement.
It is also meant to offer intergenerational literacy activities between mothers and their children in addition to providing in-home learning tools to facilitate remote learning and hygiene awareness, especially in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also seeks improve the quality of reading instruction for primary school-aged children in rural community schools by training instructors in evidence-based remedial reading instruction and by providing reading materials in community school classroomsLiterate Village uses an intergenerational approach that engages mothers and their children to eradicate illiteracy in 1,447 economically disadvantaged communities with high rates of maternal illiteracy and low rates of children’s school attendance. The activity currently reaches families in the Assiut, Beheira, and Sohag governorates.
Literate Village strengthens literacy among children in community schools by improving early grade reading instruction, particularly for remedial readers. In addition to reading instruction for children, the activity provides literacy classes to adult learners – namely mothers and women’s groups – and teaches them to engage their children in learning at home. The activity also partners with community associations and leaders to garner support for literacy and encourage school attendance, creating a network that supports a culture of reading at every level.
