The 6th Zayed Charity Marathon which was held in the Egyptian governorate of Suez on Friday aimed at raising funds for the Egyptian National Cancer Institute.

About 20, 000 youths, including handicapped, took part in the marathon which was held under the aegis of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The winners in the marathon copped about 2-million-Egyptian pound awards.

Egyptian Youth and Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy attended the marathon alongside Suez Governor Abdel Meguid Saqr, UAE Ambassador in Cairo Jumaa Mubarak and a number of popular and executive leaderships in the governorate.

Suez University President Sayed Sharqawi also attended the marathon along with a number of the university’s staff and students.

Sharqawi said the charity marathon underlined the depth of the Egyptian-UAE ties.

Sharqawi underlined the importance of the participation of disabled persons in the marathon in view of the Egyptian leadership’s interest in promoting handicapped to be more positive and productive in order to contribute to building the future of Egypt.

This is not the first time for handicapped persons to participate in such marathons. They took part in a marathon that was organized in Port Said to mark the July Revolution anniversary.

The July marathon was held under the theme of “Our health lies in our lifestyle” in order to promote the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goal 3 which calls for good health and well-being.

Also, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) organized in July a 1.5 kilometer-marathon in the Egyptian coastal city of Matrouh within the framework of celebrations of the World Population Day.

The event was meant to disseminate awareness among youths about population issues, especially bloating population and family planning.

Egypt is striving to curb swelling population within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Marathons and sports events became an effective way to serve sustainable development issues.
