Sintali CEO: Clear standards, independent certifications key to securing green finance

Eleni Polychroniadou, CEO and Co-founder of Sintali, said clear environmental standards and independent certifications are key to helping sustainable projects secure green financing, as they enable banks to assess projects against measurable environmental requirements and verify their compliance with sustainability criteria.

She said companies’ claims that their projects are environmentally friendly are not sufficient to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability, noting that such claims are difficult to verify without independent and credible assessment mechanisms.

Independent certifications, such as green building certificates, can facilitate banks’ assessment processes and provide a reliable basis for verifying projects’ compliance with environmental standards before financing decisions are made, Polychroniadou added.

She made the remarks during the first session, titled “How Can Sustainability Projects Become Bankable and Investment-Ready? From Concept to Finance,” at Egypt Sustainable Business Week.

Measuring environmental performance:

Polychroniadou called for greater support to improve projects’ environmental performance through specific indicators to measure reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions.

The Sintali CEO stressed the importance of engaging independent bodies to verify the results, enhancing projects’ credibility and helping direct green finance toward activities that are genuinely sustainable.
