EgyptAir to add carbon emissions data to flight tickets for first time
EgyptAir Holding Company has signed an agreement with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to adopt its CO2 Connect program, enabling carbon emissions data for individual flights to be displayed on passengers’ tickets for the first time.
The agreement was signed by Ahmed Adel, Chairman and CEO of EgyptAir Holding Company, and Kamil Al-Awadhi, the Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East a, in the presence of Civil Aviation Minister Sameh El Hefny on the sidelines of the El Alamein International Air Show (EIAS 2026).
The agreement reflects Egypt’s civil aviation sector’s efforts to expand the use of international sustainability standards and modern tools for measuring carbon emissions as the global aviation industry moves toward more sustainable operations.
Strengthening emissions tracking:
El Hefny said the agreement marks an important step in Egypt’s civil aviation sector’s commitment to international sustainability standards by using modern tools and methodologies to measure and monitor carbon emissions.
He said more accurate emissions data will support more efficient decision-making and strengthen airlines’ ability to meet growing environmental requirements worldwide.
The minister added that the initiative comes as air traffic continues to grow, alongside the expansion of capacity at Egyptian airports and related investments, as well as efforts by Egyptian airlines to improve fleet and operational efficiency.
He stressed that maintaining this growth requires continued efforts to improve the environmental and operational efficiency of the air transport system, in line with global efforts to reduce emissions and achieve more sustainable growth.
Bringing carbon data into bookings:
Adel said the CO2 Connect agreement is a practical step for EgyptAir to develop its system for measuring and monitoring carbon emissions from its flights through IATA’s program.
The airline will link emissions data to the Amadeus booking system, enabling the carbon emissions associated with each flight to be displayed on passengers’ tickets.
This will give EgyptAir a more accurate tool to assess the environmental performance of its flight operations, identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce emissions, and strengthen its ability to comply with international environmental requirements, including European regulations.
Aligning with global standards
Adel said EgyptAir continues to align its operations with international sustainability standards and practices to keep pace with rapidly evolving regulatory and technological changes.
He added that these efforts will support operational efficiency as the global aviation industry moves toward more sustainable operations.
