The Arab Parliament honored Egypt’s New Administrative Capital (NAC), Saudi Arabia’s NEOM and the UAE’s Mars Mission (Hope Probe) as the best Arab sustainable development projects in 2021.
This came during the Fourth Conference of the Arab Parliament and Heads of Arab Councils and Parliaments which was held at the headquarters of the League of the Arab States in Cairo.
Arab Parliament Speaker Adel Al Asoomi and Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit handed over the award to Egypt’s House Speaker Hanafy El-Gebaly in honor of NAC which is “the largest smart city in the Middle East.”
Located between the Cairo-Suez and Cairo-Ain Sokhna roads, NAC, which is under construction, will house 6.5 million people when completed.
The new capital, built over 170,000 feddans, is meant to embody the values of modern Egypt.
The central business district is among the most important ongoing projects that includes 19 hotel, residential and administrative towers, in addition to the Iconic Tower.
The district includes schools, restaurants and a hospital. The capital also has the governmental district that encompasses the Cabinet’s building and 34 buildings as well different ministries.
The UAE’s Mars Mission (Hope Probe) and Saudi Arabia’s NEOM got similar awards, while Riyadh’s Middle East Green Initiative was chosen as the best Arab initiative for sustainable development in 2021.
The Arab Parliament chose the Emirates Mars Mission Hope Probe Project as it falls within the framework of the UAE efforts to realize sustainability progress in the space sector.
The Hope orbiter was launched on 19 July 2020, and went into orbit around Mars on 9 February 2021.
The Arab Parliament also awarded Saudi Arabia’s NEOM project and the Middle East Green Initiative as the best Arab projects and initiatives for the year 2021 due to their role in promoting the concept of the future and sustainable development, as one of the models for building generations, creating smart cities, and supporting efforts to preserve the environment.
NEOM, located in the far northwest of the Kingdom in the Emirate of Tabuk, is a Saudi project aimed at building the first cognitive city with world-class technology. It was launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in October 2017 and stretches over an area of 460 kilometers on the Red Sea coast.
NEOM has recently announced the building of a new city called The Line, which is projected to become a global hub for generating clean energy.
The Line will be a city of a million residents with a length of 170 km that preserves 95% of nature within NEOM, with zero cars, zero streets and zero carbon emissions.
The Line will comprise carbon-positive urban developments powered by 100% clean energy, providing pollution-free, healthier and more sustainable environments for residents. Mixed-use communities will be built around nature, instead of over it.
The Line is the first time in 150 years that a major urban development has been designed around people, not roads. Walkability will define life on The Line – all essential daily services, such as schools, medical clinics, leisure facilities, as well as green spaces, will be within a five-minute walk.
The honoring ceremony is meant to cherish Arab sustainability efforts and encourage Arab countries to move ahead towards sustainability.
