Egypt is collaborating with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to turn Egypt’s Robbiki Leather City into an eco-friendly industrial zone.
Egypt’s Industrial Development Authority (IDA) held on Wednesday its first workshop for developing industrial zones within the framework of cooperation between the Egyptian Trade and Industry Ministry, UNIDO and Cairo for Investment and Real Estate Development (CIRA).
The two-day workshop is attended by a cluster of experts concerned with the issue.
IDA Chairman Mohamed Abdel Karim said the idea of turning Robbiki into eco-friendly zone is meant to establish more efficient zones with regard to using resources.
The project will also support zones and companies to improve social, economic and environmental performance.
The project is meant to promote the establishment of sustainable industrial cities in order to realize balance between the industrial sector’s efficiency and environmental protection.
He said the Robbiki Leather City will be an example for turning industrial zones into eco-friendly cities, adding that Robbiki is qualified to be placed among international industrial cities in light of its great industrial potentials and qualified cadres.
This step is meant to reduce resources consumption, encourage recycling and achieve industrial integration.
Robbiki, located in Badr City, 45km east of Cairo, is set to be the new hub for leather tanneries after transferring factories from Magra el-Oyoun, which is projected to be a government-sponsored tourist area.
