Six Egyptian universities crack 2026 ARWU top 1,000, Cairo University leads

Six Egyptian universities made the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) top 1,000, led by Cairo University, which ranked in the 401–500 range globally.

Alexandria, Mansoura follow in 601–700 range

Alexandria University and Mansoura University ranked in the 601–700 range, followed by Ain Shams University and Al-Azhar University in the 701–800 range.

Zagazig rounds out Egypt’s lineup:

Zagazig University ranked in the 901–1000 range, bringing the number of Egyptian universities in the global top 1,000 to six.

ARWU ranks universities on six key indicators:

The 2026 ranking, published by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, evaluates universities using six objective indicators, including Nobel Prize and Fields Medal-winning alumni and staff, highly cited researchers, publications in Nature and Science, research papers indexed in major international databases, and per-capita academic performance.

ARWU ranks more than 2,500 universities each year, with the top 1,000 published.

Harvard holds global top spot:

Harvard University topped the 2026 global ranking, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
