Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin – the United Nations special envoy on financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – was named as Egypt’s Climate Action Champion as Egypt gears up for hosting the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP27) slated for November 2022.
Mohieldin – who is – is set to assume his duties immediately in accordance with the framework of the “Marrakesh Partnership for Global Climate Action” which was endorsed by the States Parties to the Framework Convention.
Mohieldin’s appointment as Egypt’s climate champion is meant to enhance the communication between the Egyptian presidency of COP27 and businesses, the private sector and international funding institutions working in the climate change-related fields.
In his new position, Mohieldin will be in charge of coordinating with the UK’s High-Level Climate Action Champion Nigel Toppings, the UK’s high-level champion for climate Action at COP26 to raise awareness of the climate change issue and the importance of getting international organizations involved in climate action to help face climate change at non-governmental entities.
Mohieldin will also work on mobilizing international support for climate action in order to implement the goals of Paris Agreement and contribute to the efforts exerted being exerted by Egypt as the president of COP27.
Mohieldin will serve as Egypt’s climate champion at COP27 in addition to carrying out the duties of his current international posts, according to the ministry.
The veteran Egyptian economist has been entitled to several important positions, including formerly served as Egypt’s minister of investment and the World Bank Group Senior Vice President for the 2030 Development Agenda.
