Ireland’s pledge to IDA up to €141.4 m under commitment to improving lives in poorest countries

Ireland increased its pledge to the International Development Association (IDA) by 33 percent to €141.4 million, reinforcing its commitment to improving lives in the world’s poorest countries.

IDA, the World Bank’s fund for low-income countries, supports projects that boost economic growth, build resilience, and provide opportunities in 78 countries around the world. Ireland’s new pledge, announced Thursday on the sidelines of the World Bank-IMF Spring Meetings, augments its initial commitment to IDA’s 21^st replenishment (IDA21).

“IDA exemplifies what can be accomplished through coordinated global cooperation, and we take pride in financing this vital work across low-income countries. Ireland is deeply committed to development that leaves no one behind, especially amid global challenges,” said Paschal Donohoe, Minister of Finance of Ireland.

“IDA invests in people’s lives and futures by helping countries build the fundamentals of development—including clean air and water, energy and infrastructure, and healthcare. These are the building blocks for creating jobs and lifting people out of poverty. Ireland’s support strengthens this mission and expands its impact” said Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group.

IDA’s 21^st replenishment was a yearlong process that culminated in December, with a package of up to $100 billion for IDA countries. The Association supports a range of development activities, including job creation, pandemic preparedness, women’s economic empowerment, and more.
