The long-standing chief executive of Perth-based Austral Fisheries, David Carter, has this week received the prestigious Marine Stewardship Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Sustainable Seafood Awards – now in their fourth year – recognise pioneering organisations and individuals helping to end overfishing and ensure plentiful seafood supplies for future generations.
Mr Carter has dedicated more than 40 years – his entire working life – to advancing and promoting the seafood industry.
In this time Mr Carter has steered Austral Fisheries to become the world’s first carbon neutral seafood business, has fought against illegal toothfish poachers, and seen the introduction of Austral’s premium branded products in Glacier 51 Toothfish and Skull Island Prawns.
His particular focus has been on sustainable, science-based fisheries management and preserving the natural environment.
The Lifetime Achievement award recognises an individual who has worked tirelessly to advance ocean sustainability, made a huge impact on the industry, is well respected within their field and will leave a legacy behind.
MSC chief executive Rupert Howes told Mr Carter those who nominated him were undeniably inspired by his influence and landmark contributions.
“The award is therefore in recognition of the immense service and vision you have rendered to ensuring our waters thrive with continuous life into the future our children will inherit, and I hope, much thereafter,” Mr Howes said.
Austral’s Glacier 51 Toothfish was named the Best Sustainable Seafood Product, at the awards held on Monday.
