Amazon is partnering with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to pilot e-cargo bike deliveries in Washington, D.C., as part of its broader push toward alternative urban transportation solutions.
Under the program, Delivery Service Partners (DSPs) will deliver packages using a fleet of up to 15 battery-powered e-cargo bikes designed to navigate dense city streets more efficiently.
The four-wheeled e-cargo bikes are built specifically for urban deliveries and feature a secure rear cargo hold for packages. Delivery associates will also have covered seating, a windshield, and windshield wipers for weather protection.
Because of their smaller footprint compared to traditional delivery vans, the e-cargo bikes can operate in dedicated bike lanes, helping reduce traffic congestion and noise across the District.
“We’ve seen the benefits e-cargo bikes bring to urban deliveries around the world, and we’re excited to launch this pilot alongside DDOT to help ensure we get it right here in D.C.,” said Dave Alperson, vice president of North America last mile transportation at Amazon.
Alperson added that Amazon plans to continue working with community partners across the National Capital Region to combine local insights with the company’s delivery and technology expertise.
Expansion of global e-cargo bike network:
Amazon has expanded micromobility initiatives globally, including e-cargo bike and on-foot delivery programs in New York City and more than 50 cities across Europe.
The Washington, D.C., pilot marks the latest step in the company’s effort to expand safe and efficient delivery operations in urban areas.
