Twenty-one Egyptian universities were listed in the 2025 global rankings of the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) which publishes the only academic ranking of global universities that assesses the quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty, and research performance without relying on surveys and university data submissions.
Cairo University came at the top of the Egyptian universities placed in the list, followed by Ain Shams University, Mansoura University, Alexandria University, Assiut University, and Zagazig University.
The list also included Tanta University, Al-Azhar University, Beni Suef University, Helwan University, Suez Canal University, Menoufia University,Benha University, Kafr El Sheikh University and Fayoum University.
The list also comprised Minia University, the British University in Egypt, Sohag University, Suez University, the American University in Cairo and Aswan University.
About 21,462 institutions were ranked, and those that placed at the top made the Global 2000 list.
The CWUR uses seven objective and robust indicators grouped into four areas to rank the world’s universities, including “education” in view of the academic success of a university’s alumni, and measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have won prestigious academic distinctions relative to the university’s size (25%).
The four areas also include “employability” in view of the professional success of a university’s alumni, and measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have held top positions at major companies relative to the university’s size (25%).
They also comprise “Faculty” which is measured by the number of faculty members who have won prestigious academic distinctions (10%) as well as “research” in view of research output which is measured by the total number of research papers (10%), high-quality publications which are measured by the number of research papers appearing in top-tier journals (10%), influence that is measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals (10%) and citations which is measured by the number of highly-cited research papers (10%).
