Sustainable development experts highlighted that building strategies in accordance with data and needs on the ground contribute to the sustainability of development projects.
This came during a session entitled “Social Inclusion Strategies and Empowerment” held within the framework of the 15th Egypt CSR and Sustainable Development Forum (15th Egypt CSR Forum).
Mayar Naguib, Director of Communications & Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at Telecom Egypt (WE), said the company’s CSR strategy relies on several standards, including assessing the needs of citizens and stakeholders in the field, and working on bridging gaps through leveraging its telecommunications capabilities to support the most vulnerable groups and achieve tangible impact on the ground.
Naguib noted that the strategy focuses mainly on education and health, adding that the company has successfully developed WE Schools, which support excellent students interested in the telecommunications domain.
She added that the company works on honing students’ personal and communication skills to build a new highly-skilled generation, thus changing the stereotypical image of technical education.
Over five years, WE Schools – established in collaboration with the Education Ministry – have achieved significant success with the company establishing 19 schools in 19 governorates within the framework of its role in promoting economic and social empowerment.
She noted that students have improved their social conditions through freelancing, therefore contributing to bettering their families’ living standards.
She added that the number of WE schools will increase to 27 in various governorates by the new school year under a presidential directive.
As for the health sector, the company is deeply interested in supporting children’s health, she said.
She noted that the company offers assistance to hospitals, such as Ahl Masr, el Demerdash, the Cure Bank, and 57357 Hospital.
Regarding community development, Naguib said WE has supported people with disabilities for over 10 years by providing psychological, technological, and educational support to improve the quality of their life and ensure their full integration into society.
Meanwhile,Yasmine Rashed, Marketing, Communications & CSR Director of eFinance Investment Group, stated that the group operates in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Egypt Vision 2030, under the umbrella of the presidential initiative “Decent Life”.
She expounded that this is meant to support state strategies and alleviate the burden on the government.
She added that eFinance focuses on supporting the most vulnerable groups to improve citizens’ living standards in addition to promoting the concept of “sustainable happiness” in the Egyptian society.
Under commitment to CSR and sustainable development, eFinance Group has collaborated with the Sonaa El Kheir Foundation for five years where numerous development projects were implemented in various Egyptian governorates, she highlighted.
The group has also participated in rebuilding several villages under the presidential “Decent Life” initiative, improving citizens’ quality of life through upgrading houses, extending natural gas pipelines and providing a better living environment.
As for the health sector, the group has launched several initiatives in cooperation with Sonaa El Kheir, including launching medical convoys to support healthcare in the most needy areas.
Concerning education, the group supported the “Takafou” initiative which offers scholarships in various fields, focusing on technical education and linking it to employment opportunities.
Rashid also highlighted the importance of economic empowerment, referring to the establishment of a sustainability center in Fayoum to support women working in the handicrafts domain.
Meanwhile, Hassan Moustafa, Head of the annual Egypt CSR Forum and moderator of the session, noted that the world has faced many crises and disasters over the past three centuries due to environmental, living, and cultural changes, however adopting the Sustainable Development Goals contributed to curbing these crises.
Radwa Ahmed, CEO & Sustainability Director at Mountain View Foundation, said the company has a happiness-centered strategy, noting that the company seeks transforming deserts into vibrant residential areas, with a focus not only on the physical environment but also on the happiness of employees, clients, and the community.
Mostafa Zamzam, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Sonaa El Kheir Foundation, stressed the importance of research and clear indicators to identify community needs, noting that each governorate has distinct requirements.
This data-driven approach is beneficial in building strategies that create developmental impact in the targeted areas, he expounded, adding that this contributes to ensuring the sustainability of development projects.
Zamzam added that the state’s perspective on social responsibility has changed over the past decade as it engaged in partnerships with civil society and the private sector in development projects through relevant ministries.
He noted that a comprehensive database of beneficiaries has been established under the National Alliance for Civil and Developmental Work to ensure fair distribution of services and avoid duplication.
He emphasized the importance of creating job opportunities for beneficiaries of social initiatives, not just focusing on development projects.
He noted that about five million citizens have got a boon from the foundation since its inception.
He referred to the foundation’s health services, like the Hepatitis C campaign under which 640,000 citizens were screened.
The foundation also launched initiatives to establish sustainability centers for heritage and creative crafts, including a mobile center that has trained 7,000 rural women in handicrafts, with a goal to reach 30 centers nationwide within five years.
