Egypt ranks 2nd among Arab countries, 20th globally in 2025 CCPI
Egypt ranked second among Arab countries in the 2025 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), with Morocco topping Arab countries in the index.
Egypt moved up two places to rank 20th in this year’s CCPI, placing it among the medium performers. Egypt receives high ratings in GHG Emissions and Energy Use, medium in Climate Policy, and very low in Renewable Energy.
The CCPI country experts view the 42% renewable energy target by 2035 as a climate policy strength.
Data reveal low per capita GHG emissions in the country (2.08 tCO2eq). Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said that Egypt’s greenhouse gas emissions are 0.6% of the global average.
About CCPI and its methodology:
The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) is an instrument to enable transparency in national and international climate politics. The CCPI uses a standardized framework to compare the climate performance of 63 countries and the EU, which together account for over 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The climate mitigation performance is assessed in four categories: GHG Emissions, Renewable Energy, Energy Use and Climate Policy.
Rankings are based on each country’s overall score. This is calculated from the individual scores in four categories, consisting of 14 indicators. Click on a country name for greater detail.
No country performs well enough in all index categories to achieve an overall very high rating. The first three overall positions therefore remain empty.
The results show that, even if all countries were as committed as the current frontrunners, efforts would still be insufficient to prevent hazardous climate change.
The countries with high rankings also have no reason to ease up. Even greater efforts and actions by governments are needed to set the world on track to keep global warming well below a 2°C increase. Even better, 1.5°C
