First scientific study in Mideast on using preservative-free eye treatment
Eight scientists from eight Egyptian universities participated in launching the first scientific study in the Middle East specialized in preservative-free eye treatment.
The study – “See the Impact” – is meant to spread awareness about ocular surface diseases and their direct link with the use of preservatives that negatively affect the patient and cause inflammation and dryness of the eye in the long run.
The study also sheds light on how far it is better to use preservative-free drops in comparison with regular drops.
Osama Abbas – Chief Executive Officer of Orchidia Pharmaceutical Industries – said a scientific advisory council – comprising eight heavy-weight scientists in the field of ophthalmology and surgery in Egypt and North Africa – was formed to carry out specialized scientific research and studies on ocular surface diseases.
The council also shouldered the responsibility of spreading awareness about diagnosing and treating such diseases among medical communities.
The council comprised Siham Lazraq, Professor of Medicine and Surgery and Ophthalmology and expert in ocular surface diseases in Algeria, Ahmed Mostafa Abdel Rahman, Professor of Medicine, Surgery and Ophthalmology at Cairo University’s Faculty of Medicine , Hatem Ammar, Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine, Surgery and Ophthalmology at Sohag University’s Faculty of Medicine, Mohamed Shafik, Professor of Medicine, Surgery and Ophthalmology at Alexandria University’s Faculty of Medicine, Mohamed Hosny, Professor of Medicine, Surgery and Ophthalmology at Cairo University’s Faculty of Medicine, Medhat Shawky, Professor of Medicine, Surgery and Ophthalmology at Zagazig University’s Faculty of Medicine and Tamer Al-Regal, Professor of Medicine, Surgery and Ophthalmology at Ain Shams University’s Faculty of Medicine.
The Council said the study focused on highlighting the difference between using preservative-free eye drops and regular eye drops. This research was published in one of the major scientific journals.
The council also organized training sessions for young doctors to stand on the latest scientific techniques in diagnosing and treating eye surface diseases.
Also, conferences and lectures were held nationwide with the participation of key scholars in this field.
