Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has launched a voluntary designation program to help investors identify Hong Kong-listed companies with significant green business activities and strengthen capital support for the green economy.

The HKEX Green Equity program uses a transparent framework and independent assessment process to identify qualifying businesses contributing to the low-carbon transition.

Independent assessment for green businesses:

Eligible companies will be assessed by independent Recognized Reviewers under the HKEX Green Equity Framework, which evaluates the extent to which their activities contribute to the green economy.

Companies meeting the requirements will receive the designation and be allowed to use its mark, subject to ongoing compliance and annual reassessments. Applications opened on Oct. 20, with a list of approved reviewers available on HKEX’s dedicated webpage.

Supporting Hong Kong’s sustainable finance market:

HKEX Group General Counsel and Group Chief Sustainability Officer Paul Chow said the program would help investors identify credible sustainable investment opportunities and support informed investment decisions.

He added that the initiative aims to raise the profile of qualifying companies and reinforce Hong Kong’s position as an international sustainable finance hub.

The program complements HKEX’s broader sustainability offerings, including climate disclosures and products available through its Core Climate platform, such as carbon credits and Green Electricity Certificates.

It also supports the adoption of the Hong Kong Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance in capital markets and increases the global visibility of qualifying green businesses.
