Halving carbon emissions and curbing negative impact on the environment are top priority for Vodafone Global which plans to fully operate by renewable energy by 2050.
May Yassin, Sustainable Business Senior Manager & Secretary General Vodafone Egypt Foundation, made the remarks on Monday during the third edition of the Forum on Strategies for Transition to Green Economy.
She added that Vodafone Egypt worked on several axes to cut its carbon emissions, referring to the full operation the company’s data center in the Upper Egypt city of Beni Suef by renewable energy.
The company’s two buildings in the Smart Village partially operate by the solar energy, she said, adding that the company is giving up the use of single-use plastic.
She added that electronic waste is one of the most important files in the telecommunication sector.
She said Egypt’s electronic waste stands at 90,000 tons and this is a huge wealth that should be manipulated.
Vodafone Egypt was at the forefront of the private sector institutions that participated in the e-waste mechanism in tandem with the Environment Ministry, the Waste Management Regulatory Authority and the Federation of Egyptian Industries.
Vodafone Egypt is a strategic partner in the “Go Green” initiative which was launched by the Environment Ministry under the auspices of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
She added that the company also offered a chance for its customers to sell their outdated appliances and get discounts in four branches.
She noted that this is a pilot stage and the company seeks to expand this measure to other branches.
The company also worked on raising environmental awareness among people and the importance of safe disposal of e-waste through social platforms and text messages.
The company donated 10 tons of waste to the Federation of Egyptian Industries to make use of this waste with an aim to forge a comprehensive mechanism for benefiting from e-waste and curb its negative impact on the environment.
