In Mali and Burkina Faso, for example, they make up 80 percent of vehicles.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Africa, Asia and Latin America are home to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/report\/global-emerging-market-overview-electric-two-and-three-wheelers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">570 million motorcycles and three-wheelers<\/a>, the vast majority of which run on petrol. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">They can be found in urban settings, where they are ideal for skirting traffic jams, and in rural areas, where they are often the only form of transit.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These vehicles consume between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/report\/global-emerging-market-overview-electric-two-and-three-wheelers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">15 percent and 20 percent<\/a>&nbsp;of all liquid petroleum fuels used for transport in countries outside the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Shifting these vehicles to electric has the potential to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions by between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/resources\/report\/global-emerging-market-overview-electric-two-and-three-wheelers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">500 and 600 megatons<\/a>&nbsp;every year. That is the equivalent of taking between 170 and 200 million petrol-powered cars off the road \u2013 about four times the number of cars in Germany in 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The rapid growth in the two- and three-wheeler markets, especially in Africa and Asia, will only increase the importance of the transition to electricity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/people\/rob-de-jong\">UNEP Head of Mobility Unit Rob de Jong <\/a>said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Transitioning from vehicles with internal combustion engines to those powered by electricity is not just a trend\u2014it is a necessary shift to achieve net-zero emissions targets,&#8221; he highlighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Unlike internal combustion-powered three-wheelers, which emit approximately three tons of greenhouse gases per vehicle annually, electric three-wheelers could lead to zero emissions if powered by renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIn Africa, fostering a supportive political and regulatory framework is paramount to expedite this transition,\u201d De Jong said. \u201cFinancial incentives are imperative to establish a level playing field.
