A report uncovered that\u00a0over\u00a0<\/strong>5,906\u00a0<\/strong>companies (1 in 4)\u00a0reported having climate transition<\/a>\u00a0plans in place last year\u00a0through\u00a0CDP<\/a>, which runs the world’s only independent environmental disclosure\u00a0system, marking a 44% rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staying within\u00a01.5\u00b0C\u00a0remains\u00a0<\/strong>a key business goal\u00a0according to data released today<\/a>\u00a0by CDP\u00a0which shows\u00a0the number of companies\u00a0disclosing that\u00a0they have\u00a01.5\u00b0C-aligned\u00a0climate transition plans has jumped\u00a0nearly 50% in a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\u00a0further\u00a036%\u00a0<\/strong>(8,200)\u00a0disclosed\u00a0that they expected to\u00a0create one\u00a0<\/strong>by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The data suggests that progress on transition planning is no longer a nice-to-have for showing climate credibility, and is critical for businesses accessing capital, driving efficiency, and complying with market and regulatory demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climate transition plans are time-bound action plans that outline how a company’s assets, operations and entire business model will transition to a 1.5\u00b0C-aligned decarbonization pathway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CDP’s questionnaire \u2013 used by companies representing over\u00a066% of market capitalization last year \u2013 includes\u00a021 indicators<\/a>\u00a0that support companies to\u00a0disclose\u00a0<\/strong>a plan, covering key climate elements like governance, emissions reporting, strategy, target-setting, financial planning, and value chain engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new CDP analysis\u00a0also\u00a0shows that\u00a0companies can develop and\u00a0disclose\u00a0<\/strong>a \u2018credible plan\u2019 in under two years.\u00a0Twenty-five\u00a0of the\u00a0companies assessed by CDP to\u00a0cover\u00a0all indicators were those signaling\u00a0an intention to draft a plan\u00a0two years ago. Overall,\u00a039% of companies (2,329) that reported having a plan are already\u00a0disclosing\u00a0data on\u00a0most\u00a0<\/strong>of these\u00a0indicators\u00a0needed to\u00a0fully judge credibility; a clear sign that they are well on the way to developing robust plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With\u00a0disclosure on plans required by environmental\u00a0standards being applied in mandatory reporting regulation around the world, including the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS),\u00a0outperformance on credible transition plans will be an indicator of the companies set to thrive\u00a0in a net-zero economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assessing disclosures\u00a0by over 23,200 companies last year,\u00a0the report shows that businesses listed on\u00a0Europe’s FTSEurofirst 300 Index\u00a0and\u00a0Korea\u2019s\u00a0KOSPI 200\u00a0collectively outperformed their listed peers\u00a0in the G20\u00a0considerably:\u00a0with 77% and 75%\u00a0respectively\u00a0covering\u00a0most\u00a0key indicators in their disclosures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0<\/strong>S&P\/TSX60\u00a0<\/strong>(Canada) and CSI 300\u00a0(China) were the poorest performing\u00a0indices among\u00a0G20\u00a0<\/strong>countries,\u00a0<\/strong>with\u00a0only\u00a028% and\u00a029% of companies\u00a0disclosing\u00a0data\u00a0on\u00a0most key\u00a0indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sherry Madera, CEO of CDP said <\/strong>\u201cWith\u00a0nearly 50% more\u00a0companies reporting climate transition plans through CDP in 2023,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0evident\u00a0that data on forward-looking commitments are becoming crucial tools for companies to build and\u00a0maintain\u00a0confidence with market stakeholders. This momentum is unmistakable, with a further 8,000 businesses looking to have their transition plans in place by 2025. This is encouraging and a smart business move, as climate transition plans are an essential tool needed for credible businesses as they shift to net-zero.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having<\/em> <\/em>robust plans is becoming more important for accessing capital, driving business efficiencies, and for complying with<\/em> regulatory and market demands. Our data shows that companies consistently <\/em>disclosing<\/em> climate information through CDP are raising their ambition, and are more likely to be developing <\/em>detailed, credible, and effective transition plans. This year, CDP is a better partner to these companies, making it easier to disclose the robust data the world needs through our alignment with IFRS S2 and a single streamlined questionnaire for climate and nature.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, less than 1% (140)<\/strong> of all companies disclosing t<\/strong>hrough CDP reported <\/strong>to all <\/strong>21 indicators <\/strong>required to judge a plan\u2019s credibility. <\/strong>But almost all of these companies have reported data through CDP year-on-year, demonstrating that consistent climate transparency helps businesses to build credible climate transition plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CDP has also worked closely with the UK Transition Plan Taskforce to launch its \u2018Disclosure Framework\u2019 to support companies in their development of credible transition plans. Last year, the FTSE 100 was the third-best performing index in CDP\u2019s analysis, with 70 companies disclosing at least two-thirds of the 21 key indicators and we expect to see a continued increase in credible disclosure across the UK as companies begin to align with the newly released guidance. Companies can disclose TPT-compliant plans through CDP from 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt’s<\/em> good news to see the strong increase in the number of businesses <\/em>disclosing<\/em> transition plans and the further growth in intention to create a transition plan in 2025. Transition plans are now an essential part of any organization’s forward-looking strategy. CDP\u2019s data points to the increased value of using the Transition Plan Taskforce\u2019s best practice disclosure framework to ensure their reporting is comprehensive, <\/em>robust<\/em> and credible.
