As the world marks <\/span>the first-ever International Clean Energy Day on January 26, Egypt held a <\/span>ceremony marking the foundation-laying of the fourth power unit of El Dabaa <\/span>nuclear power plant (NPP) as part of its march towards transition to clean <\/span>energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Egypt has taken <\/span>major strides towards clean energy by establishing Benban solar plant in the <\/span>Upper Egypt governorate of Aswan, El Dabaa nuclear power plant in Matrouh\u00a0<\/span>governorate and Gabal El Zeit Zafarana wind farm in the Red Sea governorate.<\/span><\/p>\n

El Dabaa <\/span><\/b>nuclear power plant:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

El <\/span>Dabaa nuclear power plant plays a key role to support Egypt\u2019s climate action <\/span>and represents low-carbon and environmentally safe source of electric power.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

President <\/span>Abdel Fattah El Sisi highlighted that the power plant will help reduce <\/span>dependence on fossil fuel as recommended during the <\/span>28th<\/sup> United Nations Climate Change\u00a0<\/span><\/a>Conference (COP28).<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n

During <\/span>a ceremony held in January 2024 to mark the foundation-laying ceremony at the <\/span>fourth power unit of El Dabaa nuclear power plant, President Sisi said the <\/span>crisis in global energy supplies that the world is witnessing today underscores <\/span>the significance of the strategic decisions taken by the Egyptian State to <\/span>revive the Egyptian peaceful nuclear program for the production of electrical <\/span>energy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

This <\/span>shall contribute to providing safe, cheap, and long-term energy supplies, <\/span>reducing dependence on fossil fuels and avoiding fluctuations in their prices, <\/span>he expounded.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

President <\/span>Sisi highlighted “introducing nuclear power into the energy mix that Egypt <\/span>relies on to produce electricity is crucial to meeting the growing demands for <\/span>electrical energy so as to fulfill the needs of economic and social development <\/span>plans and contribute to boosting reliance on new and renewable energy, which <\/span>achieves environmental sustainability and addresses climate change.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n

“Unlike <\/span>coal and gas power plants, the nuclear power plant will not emit carbon dioxide <\/span>into the atmosphere, which will certainly have a beneficial effect on the <\/span>environment and human health,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said <\/span>during the ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

El <\/span>Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt is being built in full compliance with <\/span>environmental standards, Putting said, pointing out that nuclear corporation <\/span>Rosatom\u00a0<\/span><\/a>– the recognized leader in the nuclear sphere – is using the most advanced <\/span>engineering solutions, cost-effective and reliable technologies in the plant\u2019s <\/span>construction.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Egyptian <\/span>President Sisi noted that the construction of El Dabaa is ahead of schedule, <\/span>which “reflects the scale of efforts that both sides are making to <\/span>implement the project.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Sisi <\/span>highlighted that this historic event of establishing El Dabaa nuclear power <\/span>plant is “a long-standing dream of the Egyptian people”, adding that <\/span>the project will help Egypt “move forward along the path of development <\/span>and industrial growth.”<\/span><\/p>\n\n

For <\/span>his part, Alexey Likhachev, the Director General of ROSATOM, said this historic <\/span>event signifies the beginning of the main stage of the power unit construction, <\/span>thus making the four-unit El Dabaa nuclear power plant the largest nuclear <\/span>construction project on the African continent.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Likhachev <\/span>pointed out \u201cWe commemorate today a landmark event in the history of Egypt\u2019s <\/span>nuclear energy and Russian-Egyptian relations. The first concreting of the <\/span>Power unit 4 foundation slab launches the largest bilateral cooperation project <\/span>since the construction of the Aswan Dam, namely construction of the first <\/span>Egyptian nuclear power plant. Now all four power units of the El Dabaa nuclear <\/span>power plant are under construction. This means that our Egypt site is becoming <\/span>one of the two largest nuclear construction projects in the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n

El <\/span>Dabaa is the first nuclear power plant in Egypt to be built by Rosatom in the <\/span>Matrouh Governorate on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea about 300 kilometers <\/span>northwest of Cairo. This is Rosatom’s first major project in Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

By <\/span>2028, Rosatom will build four units of the plant with VVER-1200 reactors and <\/span>will supply nuclear fuel throughout the life cycle of the NPP (60 years), as <\/span>well as provide training, maintenance and repair services for 10 years after <\/span>the start-up of each unit. The contract also provides for the construction of <\/span>the first module of dry containerized storage of spent nuclear fuel by 2028. <\/span>Egypt expects the NPP to reach full capacity by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Benban <\/span><\/b>solar power plant:<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

The Benban solar park became a model of clean <\/span>energy production in Africa as the continent strives to achieve the UN strategy <\/span>in the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Benban is now one of the largest solar parks in <\/span>the world, with millions of photovoltaic panels, providing electricity to more <\/span>than one million homes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The plant\u2019s total capacity is 580 MW, and the station\u00a0<\/span>includes 580 projects, the first of which includes 120 turbines with the <\/span>capacity of 240 MW. 100 turbines were connected to the national electricity <\/span>grid, and the second project includes 110 turbines with a capacity of 220 MW, <\/span>connecting 75 turbines to the grid with the capacity of 150 MW.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project created at least 20,000 jobs during <\/span>the construction period, with an additional 6,000 permanent positions by the <\/span>companies operating the park.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Benban park extends over an area of 37<\/span>square kilometers near the \u201cdesert road\u201d between Aswan and Cairo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Launched in 2018 with the commissioning of the <\/span>first photovoltaic plant, this mega-project has been integrated into the <\/span>strategy developed by the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority. The aim <\/span>is to contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in its electricity <\/span>mix to 42% by 2030. The park alone reduces carbon emissions by two million tons <\/span>per year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Gabal El Zeit wind farm:<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>\n

Gulf <\/span>of Zeit is the biggest wind complex in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) <\/span>region with total installed capacity of 580 MW and about 3 TWh in three years\u2019 <\/span>production, which saving fossil fuel and reducing GHG emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n

It <\/span>consists of 3 phases, namely Gulf of Zeit 1, Gulf of Zeit 2 and Gulf of zeit 3 <\/span>with installed capacity of 240MW, 220MW and 120 MW respectively. The project <\/span>started in 30th Sep. 2015 and connected to the national grid in November 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>wind farm complex applies a shut down on demand approach that provides a safe <\/span>route for migratory birds.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Gulf of Zeit wind farm complex added 580 MW of installed capacity to the <\/span>Egyptian national grid in November 2018 and boosted the renewable energy <\/span>installed capacity to about 1125 MW.<\/span><\/p>\n

One <\/span>of the main goals of establishing Gulf of Zeit wind farm complex is to increase <\/span>the amount of clean energy injected to the Egyptian national electricity grid.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>total amount of wind and solar energy were representing 2.1% of the total national <\/span>grid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gulf <\/span>of Zeit wind farm complex contributes to reducing the fossil fuel consumption <\/span>and the amount of greenhouse gases emission in addition to creating more than <\/span>1.7 million man\/day employment opportunities in and outside Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Egyptian <\/span>government is cognizant of the need for a sustainable energy mix to both <\/span>address increasing demand, and to move to a more environmentally sustainable <\/span>and diverse electricity sector, according to the International Trade <\/span>Administration.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2035 Integrated <\/span>Sustainable Energy Strategy, which builds on previous strategies, emphasizes <\/span>the importance of renewable energy. Egypt is working on increasing the supply <\/span>of electricity generated from renewable sources to 42% by 2035.<\/span><\/p>\n
