{"id":94345,"date":"2024-01-12T21:17:29","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T19:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=94345"},"modified":"2024-01-12T21:17:29","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T19:17:29","slug":"wmo-chief-warns-2024-could-be-hotter-over-el-nino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/wmo-chief-warns-2024-could-be-hotter-over-el-nino\/","title":{"rendered":"WMO chief warns 2024 could be hotter over El Ni\u00f1o"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/wmo-september-hottest-on-record-2023-on-track-to-be-warmest-year\/\">World Meteorological Organization (WMO)<\/a> Secretary General Prof. Celeste Saulo \u00a0warned that as the cooling\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/topics\/el-nino-la-nina\">La Ni\u00f1a<\/a>\u00a0phenomenon was replaced with a warming\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/el-nino-expected-last-least-until-april-2024\">El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>\u00a0midway through last year &#8211; which usually has the biggest impact on global temperatures after it peaks &#8211; 2024 could be even hotter.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Saulo\u00a0explained that \u201cwhile El Ni\u00f1o events are naturally occurring and come and go from one year to the next,\u00a0longer term climate change is escalating and this is unequivocally because of human activities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Every month between June and December set new records. July and August were the two hottest months ever recorded,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\">WMO<\/a>\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The 1.5\u00b0C figure is the temperature limit set out clearly in the 2015\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\">Paris Agreement<\/a>\u00a0on Climate Change but that refers to the long-term temperature increase averaged over decades, rather than an individual year like 2023.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cClimate change is the biggest challenge that humanity faces. It is affecting all of us, especially the most vulnerable,\u201d said the WMO secretary general Prof. Celeste Saulo, presenting the findings of a recent report. \u201cWe cannot afford to wait any longer. We are already taking action, but we have to do more, and we have to do it quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">For that, Prof. Saulo explained, drastic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and accelerated transition to renewable energy sources are needed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Since the 1980s, each decade has been warmer than the previous one and the past nine years have been the warmest on record. The data drawn from the six datasets shows that the ten-year average temperature increase in 2014-2023 was at about 1.20\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHumanity\u2019s actions are scorching the Earth. 2023 was a mere preview of the catastrophic future that awaits if we don\u2019t act now. We must respond to record-breaking temperature rises with path-breaking action,\u201d UN chief Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said in response to the latest data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can still avoid the worst of climate catastrophe. But only if we act now with the\u00a0ambition required to limit the rise\u00a0in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius and deliver climate justice,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Long-term monitoring of global temperatures is just one indicator of how climate is changing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Other key indicators include atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, ocean heat and acidification, sea level, sea ice extent and glacier mass balance to name a few.
