{"id":93688,"date":"2023-12-14T17:41:58","date_gmt":"2023-12-14T15:41:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=93688"},"modified":"2023-12-13T17:46:03","modified_gmt":"2023-12-13T15:46:03","slug":"tetra-pak-sets-4-pathways-to-accelerate-transition-to-more-sustainable-resilient-food-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/tetra-pak-sets-4-pathways-to-accelerate-transition-to-more-sustainable-resilient-food-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Tetra Pak sets 4 pathways to accelerate transition to more sustainable, resilient food systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/tetra-pak-index54-of-consumers-consider-future-of-planet-when-making-food-choices\/\">Tetra Pak<\/a> has set four pathways to accelerate the transition to more secure, sustainable and resilient food systems under an integrated approach launched on the back of the COP28\u2019s First Food, Agriculture and Water Day.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">This builds further on the company\u2019s lead in the Global Dairy Processing Task Force, which, as part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pathwaystodairynetzero.org\/\">\u2018Pathways to Dairy Net Zero\u2019<\/a>\u00a0climate initiative, aims to explore the innovative systems and technologies needed to further drive down greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in dairy processing.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Charles Brand, Executive Vice President for Processing Solutions &amp; Equipment, Tetra Pak, said \u201cTransforming food systems is crucial for a viable future. Today, these systems are inefficient and unsustainable, responsible for over one third of GHG emissions,<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0while one third of food produced is lost or wasted.<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0Food systems are also failing people, with 9% of the world&#8217;s population going hungry<sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0and 30% experiencing malnutrition.<sup>5<\/sup>\u00a0In addition, food value chains are driving deforestation and biodiversity loss, and are estimated to be the second most critical avenue to addressing climate change, behind energy. We cannot phase out food, but we can transform these systems to ensure they are more secure, resilient and sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Tetra Pak has identified four key pathways to accelerate food systems transformation. The company has also established\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tetrapak.com\/sustainability\/acting-for-sustainability\/moving-food-forward\/targets\">roadmaps and measurable targets for each of these pathways<\/a>, aligning with the critical transitions for food and land transformation proposed by the Food and Land Use Coalition.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The four pathways include enabling the transition towards\u00a0more sustainable dairy<sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0by addressing the environmental impact of dairy processing while supporting smallholder farmers\u2019 productivity, profitability and livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">They also encourage innovating for\u00a0new food sources, such as diversifying with alternative proteins, to complement dairy and other animal protein sources.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The pathways also underlined the importance of reducing food loss and waste,\u00a0by developing food processing technologies that help reduce food waste during production, including new solutions to turn low-value side streams that would otherwise go wasted into value-added products. Aseptic packaging solutions already play a fundamental role in reducing food waste by extending the shelf life of perishable foods, without the need for preservatives or refrigeration. This enables widespread distribution, even in remote geographies with inadequate cold chain infrastructure.\u00a0<sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">They also called for scaling access to safe nutrition<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>through sustainable food packaging,<sup>10<\/sup>\u00a0by designing and deploying sustainable food packaging solutions that preserve food quality and improve access to safe food.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The announcement coincided with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tetrapak.com\/sustainability\/acting-for-sustainability\/moving-food-forward\/white-papers\">Tetra Pak&#8217;s launch of its white paper, in collaboration with EY Parthenon<\/a>, which examines the key food systems requirements to better sustain both people and the planet by 2040.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Charles\u00a0concluded \u201cAt Tetra Pak, we&#8217;re not just making pledges; we&#8217;re driving a transformative agenda, based on a robust evidence-base. We are answering the call for private sector engagement by demonstrating both our ambitions and our strategic plan on how we will realise them.
