The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)<\/a> has partnered with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Trade Center (ITC) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) to hold the first-ever \u201cTrade House pavilion\u201d at COP28 to spark discussions and advance consensus on trade-related measures that can help drive both climate and sustainable development actions.<\/p>\n

The 28th UN climate change conference (COP28 )<\/a> \u2013 due to be held in Dubai in November – is the first climate summit to dedicate an entire day \u2013 Trade Day on December 4 – to discussions on trade’s role in climate action in addition to hold the Trade House pavilion.<\/p>\n

The pavilion will showcase how trade-led development can bolster climate action using coordinated and inclusive approaches to accelerate a global just transition to a low-carbon economy. It will also offer a platform for knowledge exchange and co-creation of pro-development solutions among stakeholders from across the globe.<\/p>\n

It will comprise expert panel discussions on topics such as ensuring a just energy transition from a development perspective, South-South trade in environmentally preferable goods and services, and trade-related measures to advance the implementation of nationally determined contributions.<\/p>\n

Panelists will also discuss services that support the energy transition, the role of plastic substitutes, sustainable investment, finance and the blue economy in supporting the just transition, among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cClimate and trade policies need to work together. As the world is coping with the devastating effects of global warming, it\u2019s time for trade to play its role in shaping climate action that fosters inclusive and sustainable development,\u201d UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis starts with the international organizations with a trade mandate joining forces, and UNCTAD is pleased to work with our partners to host this first Trade House pavilion at COP28,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said \u201cI invite you to the first ever Trade House pavilion, a new aspect of COP28 together with Trade Day. We want to demonstrate that trade is part of the solution to the climate crisis. To support our discussions, we will bring to the table a menu of trade policy actions that could help countries reach net zero.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA just transition requires coherent pro-development climate and trade measures, partnerships and policies. We must work together to explore innovative solutions that leverage trade as a force for good,\u201d said Chantal Line Carpentier, head of UNCTAD\u2019s trade, environment, climate change and sustainable development branch.<\/p>\n
