L’Or\u00e9al-UNESCO For Women in Science” program<\/a> has acknowledged and supported the endeavors of 15 exceptional Egyptian scientists, thus serving as a testament to L’Or\u00e9al Egypt<\/a>‘s steadfast dedication to nurturing women’s potential. By enabling these scientists to excel in their scientific pursuits, the program empowers them to achieve groundbreaking advancements that shape the future of science.<\/p>\n

This remarkable program has been supporting women in science for 25 years and has had a substantial global and local influence. It has recognized over 4,100 women scientists, including 127 women who have received international laureate awards. With 52 programs in over 110 countries and over 500 scientists participating each year, the program has been instrumental in breaking down gender boundaries and inspiring future generations of women to pursue scientific professions.<\/p>\n

The L’Or\u00e9al Foundation and UNESCO proudly announced the honorees of the L\u2019Or\u00e9al-UNESCO International Award, which recognized five women scientists for their outstanding work. The momentous event took place at UNESCO\u2019s Headquarters in Paris on the occasion of its twenty-fifth anniversary.<\/p>\n

During the event, three remarkable researchers were recognized for their courage and determination in pursuing their scientific careers despite highly challenging professional and personal situations. Dr. Mursal Dawodi (from Afghanistan) was honored for her research in the field of AI, Dr. Ann Al Sawoor (from Iraq) for her work in Mathematics, and Dr. Marycelin Baba (from Nigeria) for her contributions to Molecular Biology.<\/p>\n

The ceremony took place in the presence of Alexandra Palt, Chief Executive Director of the L’Or\u00e9al Foundation, Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, as well as representatives of academic and scientific institutions, journalists, and media professionals.<\/p>\n

This ceremony also celebrated the remarkable and historic journey of the L\u2019Or\u00e9al-UNESCO For Women in Science Program, which has gained international recognition for its commitment to recognizing the scientific excellence of female researchers at the national, regional, and global levels since its inception in 1998.<\/p>\n

In addition, a number of former researchers from different countries joined the celebration, including Dr. Nagwa Abdel-Meguid, chairman of the jury of L\u2019Or\u00e9al-UNESCO Egypt for Young Researchers in Egypt.<\/p>\n

For Alexandra Palt, Chief Executive Director of the Fondation L\u2019Or\u00e9al \u201cNigerian, Afghan, Iraqi, each of them had to flee her country to survive, study and fulfill their vocation: to serve science. Paying tribute to these women scientists and saluting their resilience is crucial. Because one of the Foundation’s missions is to fight against all the obstacles that stand in the way of women scientists, the L’Or\u00e9al Foundation wanted – for the first time – to support female scientific talent in exile and help them pursue their research.\u201d<\/p>\n

The submission period for the 6th edition of the program in 2023 opened in March and will conclude on July 30, 2023. The winners of this edition will be announced in November 2023.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the L\u2019Or\u00e9al-UNESCO For Women in Science International Awards continue to inspire and promote the inclusion of women scientists worldwide. As the world faces critical challenges, science must draw on the talents of all individuals. As the United Nations body with a specific mandate for science and gender equity, UNESCO is committed to eliminating all forms of discrimination against women and girls.
