{"id":88190,"date":"2023-06-02T20:37:19","date_gmt":"2023-06-02T17:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=88190"},"modified":"2023-06-02T20:37:19","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T17:37:19","slug":"wmo-to-bolster-gender-equality-with-1st-female-chief-new-resolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/wmo-to-bolster-gender-equality-with-1st-female-chief-new-resolution\/","title":{"rendered":"WMO to bolster gender equality with 1st female chief, new resolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/microsoft-google-meta-other-tycoons-back-wmo-early-warnings-initiative\/\"> World Meteorological Organization (WMO)<\/a> is committed to bolstering gender equality with naming its first-ever female Secretary General Prof. <a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/about-us\/governance\/celeste-saulo\">Celeste Saulo of Argentina<\/a> and approving a resolution reaffirming the goal of \u201cachieving gender equality and building resilience through the provision of gender-sensitive weather, hydrological and climate services which respond to the specific needs and socioeconomic circumstances of women and men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">It reaffirms the minimum target of at least 40% of female members of the working structures of regional associations, technical commissions and the Research Board.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Gender balance, diversity and inclusivity will be one of the priorities of WMO\u2019s first female Secretary-General Prof. Celeste Saulo, who was appointed by Congress. She will take office on 1 January 2024.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWMO altogether still has a long way to go,\u201d Dr Sue Barrell, the winner of the International Meteorological Organization prize, told a gender breakfast. The event brought together more than 100 women and men from all regions for a brainstorming and networking session.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201dFor me success is when the word women becomes redundant. When we don\u2019t talk about women leaders and scientists any more, we just talk about leaders and scientists,\u201d said Dr Barrell.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThe challenge starts at home, and it\u2019s especially timely for Members to accelerate efforts to create the diverse and inclusive workforce needed now and into the future to better serve our shared mission, and to ensure that the information shared with users genuinely reflects their needs. It\u2019s not just about being fair and equitable to everyone; it\u2019s about making the best use of the resources and capability we share to deliver the best outcomes for all,\u201d said Dr Barrell.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Dr Barrell quoted former Chinese leader Mao Zedong when he said that \u201cWomen hold up half the sky\u201d.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cIt\u2019s about making sure we are indeed holding up the whole sky,\u201d concluded Dr Barrell.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Strategic Plan aims at advancing equal, effective and inclusive participation in governance, scientific cooperation and decision-making. Its focus in 2020-2023 has been to \u201cadvance gender equality across the Organization, especially in governance and decision-making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The biggest advances have been achieved in women\u2019s participation in leadership, with a particular surge in female vice-presidents, chairs and co-chairs.
