The United Nations\u00a0Environment Program\u00a0(UNEP)<\/a> has\u00a0launched the next phase of\u00a0Tide Turners<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest youth-led movement against the plastic crisis,\u00a0with the United-Kingdom announcing\u00a0\u00a31,6 million\u200e\u00a0of funding for the next three years.<\/p>\n

In an\u00a0event\u00a0held\u00a0in New Delhi\u00a0with the participation of\u00a0a global audience of young people,\u00a0the achievements of the young environmental champions\u00a0part of the Tide Turners program\u00a0were\u00a0celebrated,\u00a0and\u00a0the path was set\u00a0for\u00a0the next three years\u00a0of mobilization\u00a0to combat plastic pollution\u00a0around the\u00a0world.<\/p>\n

Globally, an estimated\u00a019 to 23 million tons<\/a>\u00a0of plastic waste is dumped in\u00a0lakes,\u00a0rivers,\u00a0and seas annually.\u00a0From the\u00a0peak\u00a0of Everest to the bottom of the oceans, plastic pollution is\u00a0rampant, harming human health, the economy, our environment and threatening the achievement of sustainable development.<\/p>\n

Young people\u00a0\u2013\u00a0entrepreneurs, community leaders\u00a0and\u00a0change-makers\u00a0\u2013\u00a0are\u00a0taking centre\u00a0stage\u00a0in global efforts to address the plastic pollution crisis. Through the\u00a0Tide Turners Plastic Challenge<\/a>,\u00a0UNEP\u00a0works with partners\u00a0including\u00a0the\u00a0World Organization of the Scouts Movement<\/a>\u00a0(WOSM),\u00a0the\u00a0World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts<\/a>\u00a0(WAGGGS),\u00a0WWF India<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Centre for Environment Education (CEE)<\/a>\u00a0India to build the\u00a0capacities\u00a0of young people to\u00a0act\u00a0against plastic pollution and create a global movement.<\/p>\n

Featuring\u00a0well-known speakers such as\u00a0Dia\u00a0Mirza,\u00a0UNEP\u2019s Goodwill Ambassador<\/a>, and Afroz Shah,\u00a0UNEP Champion of the Earth<\/a>,\u00a0Thursday\u2019s\u00a0event\u00a0brought together institutional\u00a0partners and young leaders, along with a global audience of\u00a0200\u00a0people.<\/p>\n

Violet Adhiambo,\u00a0a member of\u00a0the Girls\u00a0Guides\u00a0of\u00a0Kenya,\u00a0said\u00a0\u201cI trained\u00a0girls\u00a0in schools on how to recycle plastics and turn into treasures. They are making decorations out of\u00a0plastics,\u00a0and we also have an initiative selling plastic waste for money to get uniforms. There\u00a0are so many of us out there\u00a0\u2013\u00a0if\u00a0we all pick\u00a0up plastics, we can make our environment clean.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sneha Shahi,\u00a0who was\u00a0a student at\u00a0the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, cleaned up\u00a0a river on\u00a0her\u00a0college\u00a0campus, removing over 700 kg of plastic waste.\u00a0She\u00a0explained:\u00a0\u201cWe are collecting plastics on the beach\u00a0but ultimately,\u00a0the\u00a0challenge we face is that there is no way to segregate or recycle waste in my community. The closest\u00a0recycling plant is 200 kms away and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0been very costly for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe power of\u00a0young people, including\u00a0scouts and the\u00a0girl\u00a0guides,\u00a0to drive environmental action,\u00a0is phenomenal.\u00a0The Tide Turners program has reached more than 588,000 youth globally in 40 countries\u00a0and\u00a0UNEP is\u00a0keen to\u00a0strengthen our partnership with young environmental leaders, including those\u00a0gathered here,\u00a0and bring their impact to the next level,\u201d\u00a0said Bruno Pozzi, Deputy\u00a0Director\u00a0of the Ecosystems Division at UNEP.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0fifth\u00a0phase of the Tide Turners\u00a0will focus on scaling-up advocacy training for young people\u00a0as a way to\u00a0open up\u00a0the relationship between youth and\u00a0policymakers.<\/p>\n
