{"id":86546,"date":"2023-04-03T16:59:46","date_gmt":"2023-04-03T14:59:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=86546"},"modified":"2023-04-03T16:59:46","modified_gmt":"2023-04-03T14:59:46","slug":"unep-launches-new-study-on-methane-emissions-from-offshore-wells-in-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/unep-launches-new-study-on-methane-emissions-from-offshore-wells-in-africa\/","title":{"rendered":"UNEP launches new study on methane emissions from offshore wells in Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The United Nations Environment Program\u2019s (UNEP) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/explore-topics\/energy\/what-we-do\/methane\">International Methane Emissions Observatory<\/a>\u00a0launched a new study that charts how much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/egypt-among-11-states-joining-eu-us-for-launching-global-methane-pledge-energy-pathway\/\">methane<\/a> is spilling from wells off the coast of Angola and Gabon.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The move was triggered by dearth of data on methane emissions from Africa\u2019s offshore oil and gas sector.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After finalizing the study, Gabon and Angola will have to take certain measures to cut methane emissions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential more than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/explore-topics\/energy\/facts-about-methane\">80 times greater<\/a>\u00a0than that of carbon dioxide during the 20 years after it is released into the atmosphere. And the oil and gas industry is a major emitter.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Methane can be released at various stages of production, including during exploration, extraction, transportation and storage. It can also leak from equipment such as valves, pumps, and pipelines during the transportation and storage of natural gas.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Reducing methane emissions is one of the most effective steps the energy sector can take to help tackle the climate crisis. The Paris Agreement cannot be achieved without reducing methane emissions by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/explore-topics\/energy\/facts-about-methane\">40-45 per cent by 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Measuring methane with precision is considered key to reaching those targets.
