Zero-emission<\/a> ferries, cruises and cargo ships will set sail in the UK<\/abbr>\u00a0waters within 2 years, creating thousands of new jobs, thanks to a \u00a377 million government investment in clean maritime technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the first time in\u00a0UK<\/abbr>\u00a0history the government is intervening to specifically target this level of funding on green maritime tech which is already well developed. The funding will take the tech from the factory to the sea \u2013 identifying which projects will have a long-term impact in reducing emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Successful projects must show they could use this money to work with major\u00a0UK<\/abbr>\u00a0ports and operators to launch a zero-emission vessel by 2025 at the latest.<\/span><\/p>\n

Examples of such technology include battery electric vessels, shoreside electrical power, ships running on low carbon fuels like hydrogen or ammonia, and wind-assisted ferries.<\/span><\/p>\n

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said \u201cWhen it comes to tackling climate change, we are taking action on all transport modes, which is why we\u2019re making sure our world-leading maritime sector has a greener future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This multi-million-pound investment will help the latest tech ideas become reality and ensure\u00a0UK<\/abbr>\u00a0waters will play host to green cargo ships, ferries and cruises in the next few years.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur funding will support a cleaner freight system, a more environmentally friendly tourism industry, and a net-zero maritime sector.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The multi-million-pound\u00a0Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure (ZEVI<\/abbr>) competition<\/span><\/a>, launched today, 6 February 2023 \u2013 will see innovative companies apply for the funding, which must be used to decarbonize technology both on board and shoreside.<\/span><\/p>\n

The investment demonstrates the government\u2019s commitment to a new green age for maritime travel, which is free from emissions, in line with the 1.5-degree temperature target set by the\u00a0Paris Agreement<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Innovate\u00a0UK<\/abbr>\u00a0will work closely with the Department for Transport in delivering the Zero Emission Vessel and Infrastructure competition, resulting in multi-year real world demonstrations of clean maritime technologies around the\u00a0UK<\/abbr>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The government is also calling on universities across the\u00a0UK<\/abbr>\u00a0to join forces to establish a new Clean Maritime Research Hub, with \u00a37.4 million funding from government and additional funding from academia and industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

Research in the fundamental science behind clean maritime technologies will be delivered by the hub, building evidence and expertise for the maritime sector. It will also support skills development across the industry and generate knowledge for maritime decision-makers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The hub will be delivered in partnership with and co-funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC<\/abbr>), part of\u00a0UK<\/abbr>\u00a0Research and Innovation (UKRI<\/abbr>).<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0ZEVI<\/abbr>\u00a0fund and Clean Maritime Research Hub are part of the\u00a0UK<\/abbr>\u00a0SHORE<\/abbr> program, launched in March 2022 with \u00a3206 million in funding.
