Data from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO<\/a>) showed that 70 per cent of 10-year-olds in low and middle-income countries are unable to read and understand a simple text.<\/p>\n

UNESCO data added that 224 million children still out of school this year.<\/p>\n

Commitments made last year at a landmark UN conference to transform education globally must be translated into action, UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said on Tuesday in his message to mark\u00a0the\u00a0International Day of Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He\u00a0called<\/a>\u00a0for countries to deliver education systems \u201cthat can support equal societies, dynamic economies and the limitless dreams of every learner in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

The theme for the\u00a0International Day<\/a>\u00a0this year is \u201cto invest in people, prioritize education\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Special focus is being given to girls and women in Afghanistan who have been prohibited from attending secondary school and university in the wake of the Taliban takeover in August 2021.<\/p>\n

The Secretary-General said education is a fundamental human right and the bedrock of societies, economies, and every person\u2019s potential.<\/p>\n

However, he warned that this potential will \u201cwither on the vine\u201d without adequate investment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has always been shocking to me that education has been given such a low priority in many government policies and in international cooperation instruments,\u201d he commented.<\/p>\n

Guterres recalled that at the\u00a0Transforming Education Summit<\/a>, held last September, countries gathered together to \u201creimagine education systems so every learner accesses the knowledge and skills required to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 130 nations made commitments to ensure that universal quality education becomes a central pillar of public policies and investments.<\/p>\n

The Summit outcomes included a Call to Action on Educational Investment, as well as the establishment of the International Financing Facility for Education.<\/p>\n

Several global initiatives were launched there, including to mobilize support for education in crises settings, girls\u2019 education, transforming teaching, and \u2018green\u2019 education systems.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cNow is the time for all countries to\u00a0translate their Summit commitments into concrete actions\u00a0that create supportive and inclusive learning environments for all students,\u201d said Guterres.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow is also the time to end all discriminatory laws and practices that hinder access to education,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
