Majid Al Futtaim<\/a> Properties was among leading global companies that pledged to halve their building-related emissions by 2030 and reach net-zero carbon no later than 2050.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe industry has traditionally looked at investments in sustainability as a trade-off with other aspects like customer experience, but it\u2019s very clear that we need to shift our mindset,\u201d said\u00a0Ahmed Galal Ismail, CEO, Majid Al Futtaim Properties. \u201cSustainability is actually a trade-on and sustainable assets are more valuable. We are committed to transitioning our portfolio and proving what is possible in alignment with the Principles.\u201d<\/p>\n

With buildings contributing 38% of all energy-related\u00a0greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>, leaders across all industries have a critical role to play in lowering their global real estate emissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile real estate represents nearly 40% of all energy-related GHG emissions, the sector is frequently an afterthought when it comes to an organization\u2019s decarbonization and sustainability strategies,\u201d said\u00a0Matthew Blake, Head of Financial and Monetary Systems, World Economic Forum. \u201cLeaders across all industries have a responsibility to take action on their real estate GHG emissions to ensure progress in the fight against climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the companies that made this pledge are Avison Young, Edge, GPFI Group, Ivanho\u00e9 Cambridge, JLL, Majid Al Futtaim Properties, Schneider Electric, and Signify.<\/p>\n

These firms will meet these targets by implementing the Forum\u2019s Green Buildings Principles. Released last year, the\u00a0Green Building Principles: The Action Plan for Net-Zero Carbon Buildings<\/em><\/a>\u00a0provides a clear sequence of steps to deliver net-zero carbon real estate portfolios, topped by Calculating a robust\u00a0carbon footprint\u00a0of your portfolio in the most recent representative year to inform targets.<\/p>\n

This also included setting a\u00a0target year\u00a0for achieving net-zero carbon, by\u00a02050\u00a0<\/strong>at the latest, and an interim target for reducing at least\u00a050% <\/strong>of these emissions by 2030.<\/p>\n

In addition, this included measuring and recording\u00a0embodied carbon\u00a0of new developments and major refurbishments as well as maximizing emissions reductions for all\u00a0new developments and major refurbishments\u00a0in the pipeline to ensure delivery of net-zero carbon (operational and embodied) by selected final target year.<\/p>\n

This also comprised driving\u00a0energy optimization\u00a0across both existing assets and new developments, maximizing supply of on-site\u00a0renewable energy, ensuring\u00a0100% off-site energy\u00a0is procured from\u00a0renewable-backed sources, where available and engaging with stakeholders with whom you have influence in your value chain to\u00a0reduce scope 3 emissions.<\/p>\n

This also included compensating for any residual emissions by purchasing\u00a0high-quality\u00a0carbon offsets in addition to engaging with stakeholders to identify joint endeavors and\u00a0equitably share costs and benefits\u00a0of interventions<\/p>\n

Developed in collaboration with JLL, the World Green Building Council and the Forum\u2019s Real Estate community, the Green Building Principles can be formally adopted by firms and include an Action Plan detailing implementation.<\/p>\n

The Action Plan provides globally applicable guidance on best practices to implement the principles for every stakeholder, from owners to occupiers to investors. Signatories will report progress annually as part of their public sustainability reporting and participate in a Practitioners Group to identify solutions around implementation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
