The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)<\/a> suggested several ideas for planet-friendly holiday season worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cIt is possible to have enjoyable and memorable holidays and buy and spend less this holiday season by embracing some changes in our consumer habits,\u201d said Garrette Clark, an expert in sustainable living with the UNEP.<\/p>\n

UNEP\u2019s research shows that about\u00a0two-thirds<\/a>\u00a0of greenhouse gas emissions are linked to household decisions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that lifestyle changes could help slash planet-warming emissions by up to\u00a070 percent<\/a>\u00a0by 2050.<\/p>\n

The UNEP suggested purchasing home-made or upcycled gifts. This way would promote a\u00a0circular economy<\/a>\u00a0that focuses on reducing waste and increasing reuse, recycling and recovery of products and materials.<\/p>\n

It also suggests choosing sustainable fashion. People buy\u00a060 percent<\/a>\u00a0more clothing today than 15 years ago, and each item is kept for only half as long. The toll on the planet is heavy – the fashion industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for\u00a02-8 percent\u00a0<\/a>of global carbon emissions.<\/p>\n

The UNEP suggests buying locally made products and locally grown food. It can be more economical. It helps local businesses. And it cuts down on how far goods must travel, reducing the amount of fossil fuels burned during transportation.<\/p>\n

It also called for opting for a vacation<\/a>\u00a0closer to home, and preferably in nature. This can be rewarding for health, the local economy, the environment, and pocketbook.<\/p>\n

The UNEP also suggested buying second-hand gifts. This not only offers creative, unique gifts, but saves cash and encourages reuse.<\/p>\n

It also called for swapping disposables for reusable. <\/strong>Every minute, the\u00a0equivalent of one garbage truck<\/a>\u00a0of plastic is dumped into our ocean.\u00a0Half of all plastic produced is designed for single-use purposes \u2013 used just once and then thrown away.<\/p>\n

Plastic pollution can reduce ecosystems\u2019 ability to adapt to climate change, directly affecting millions of people\u2019s livelihoods, food production and well-being.<\/p>\n

Addressing the problem of plastic pollution will require a\u00a0full life-cycle approach<\/a>\u00a0in which consumers play a critical role. Each year,\u00a0five trillion plastic bags<\/a>\u00a0are used, majority of which end up in oceans. Try to wrap gifts in recycled paper or reusable material such as cloth. Avoid disposable cups, plastic water bottles and food containers, replacing them with reusable items.<\/p>\n

Before throwing away holiday wrapping, consider that every year,\u00a0about 11.2 billion tonnes of solid waste<\/a>\u00a0is collected worldwide. The increasing volume and complexity of waste associated with the modern economy is posing a serious risk to ecosystems and human health.<\/p>\n

The UNEP also called for reducing food waste. When shopping for holiday meal ingredients, avoid food waste by only buying what you need.\u00a0One-third of all food produced in the world \u2013 approximately\u00a01.3 billion tonnes<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 is squandered every year. Almost\u00a0570 million tonnes<\/a>\u00a0is lost or wasted at the household level. This waste\u00a0needlessly contributes<\/a>\u00a0to biodiversity loss, pollution and\u00a0climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To avoid waste, pack left-overs and find new recipes to reuse what\u2019s left. Final remains can be composted to help\u00a0reduce greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Finally, the UNEP suggested eat plant-rich foods. Cultures around the world offer several vegetable-based recipes that are both nutritious and planet-friendly.<\/p>\n

Meat production is a\u00a0major driver<\/a>\u00a0of the climate crisis. Due to manure and gastroenteric releases, livestock farming accounts for\u00a032 percent<\/a>\u00a0of human-caused methane emissions. Methane is a\u00a0powerful greenhouse gas<\/a>\u00a0with a global warming potential more than 80 times greater than that of carbon dioxide during the 20 years after it is released into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0average person consumes\u00a0100 grams<\/a>\u00a0of meat daily. Incorporating more plants into your diet could improve human health while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n
