{"id":82849,"date":"2022-11-19T21:32:20","date_gmt":"2022-11-19T19:32:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=82849"},"modified":"2022-11-19T21:32:20","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T19:32:20","slug":"unido-official-circular-bio-based-economy-vital-for-climate-change-targets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/unido-official-circular-bio-based-economy-vital-for-climate-change-targets\/","title":{"rendered":"UNIDO official: Circular bio-based economy vital for climate change targets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Stephan Sicars, Director of the Circular Economy and Environmental Protection Division at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/unido-eni-partner-to-promote-sdgs-in-africa\/\">(UNIDO<\/a>), considered circular bio-based economy as a powerful tool for protecting the environment and meeting our climate change targets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Sicars said, \u201cWe see the circular bio-based economy as a powerful tool for protecting the environment and meeting our climate change targets, for restoring degraded soils, strengthening local manufacturing, substituting imports and promoting exports, attracting new investments and creating local jobs, including in rural areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">He made the remarks during a side-event at the 27<sup>th<\/sup> United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) focusing on the role of bio-based industries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, for example, by diverting biomass from landfills, while fostering economic competitiveness, creating jobs, safeguarding the environment and protecting biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Ali Abo Sena, head of Egypt\u2019s Environmental Affairs Agency at the Ministry of Environment, introduced his country\u2019s first national bio-based economy strategy, supported by UNIDO, with funding from Switzerland.\u00a0The strategy will contribute Egypt\u2019s climate change mitigation and adaptation and sustainable development objectives\u00a0by maximizing the return on Egypt\u2019s biomass residues and industrial crops. He empathized that all the relevant ministries need to come together to make efforts to turn the strategies into actions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Michal Harari, Deputy Head of Cooperation at the Embassy of Switzerland in Egypt, elaborated on examples of bioeconomy tools and initiatives supported by Switzerland in Egypt and other countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Ehab Usama,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chitosaneg.com\/\">Chitosan Egypt<\/a>, and Ahmed Rady,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.egymag.co\/\">Egymag Biotechnology Company<\/a>, presented their innovative business models and technologies for valorizing agricultural and food waste to produce feed, organic and bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides, while at the same time providing new income-generating possibilities for waste collectors. They also highlighted the challenges that entrepreneurs face in bringing innovative bio-based products to the market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.csir.co.za\/dr-maya-jacob-john\">Maya Jacob John<\/a>, from South Africa\u2019s Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, elaborated not only on the benefits of using agricultural residues\u00a0as local material inputs\u00a0and how it would contribute to development of green industry in South Africa,\u00a0but also on the importance of the design stage.\u00a0\u201cBringing in biodegradable material does not solve plastic leaking to the environment,\u201d she said. \u201cRather it is important to develop a circular system, including the improvement of the collection system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Ahmed Gaber,\u00a0Chairman,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chemonicsegypt.com\/\">Chemonics Egypt Consultants<\/a>, stressed the timely development of Egypt\u2019s first bio-based economy strategy and the critical role that it will play in removing barriers for businesses manufacturing innovative bio-based products and therefore in advancing sustainable industrial development and enhancing Egypt\u2019s economic competitiveness.\u00a0 Gaber also emphasized the importance of having plans at the regional and governorate levels for the bio-based economy to leverage the comparative advantages of each territory.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">Jukka Kantola from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wcbef.com\/\">World Bio-Economy Forum<\/a>\u00a0concluded the panel discussion by shedding light on the international dimension of the circular bio-economy and the latest developments at the global level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stephan Sicars, Director of the Circular Economy and Environmental Protection Division at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), considered circular bio-based economy as a powerful tool for protecting the environment and meeting our climate change targets.
