{"id":82314,"date":"2022-11-08T23:24:54","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T21:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=82314"},"modified":"2022-11-08T23:24:54","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T21:24:54","slug":"gfa-unep-team-up-for-sustainable-fashion-consultations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/gfa-unep-team-up-for-sustainable-fashion-consultations\/","title":{"rendered":"GFA, UNEP team up for sustainable fashion consultations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Global Fashion Agenda (GFA) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/unep-urges-to-forge-laws-to-phase-out-lead-in-paint\/\">United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)<\/a> announced that they have partnered \u2013 during <a href=\"https:\/\/cop27.eg\/#\/\">the 27<sup>th<\/sup> United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27)<\/a> &#8211; to launch the Fashion Industry Target Consultation \u2013 seeking public input on cohesive and measurable fashion industry impact targets.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The Fashion Industry Target Consultation will aim to identify and converge existing industry-aligned targets, according to the five priorities of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalfashionagenda.org\/fashion-ceo-agenda\/\"><em>Fashion CEO Agenda<\/em><\/a>: Respectful &amp; Secure Work Environments, Better Wage Systems, Resource Stewardship, Smart Material Choices and Circular Systems. Moreover, the Consultation will seek to formulate new targets where they are not currently covered \u2013 such as criteria for purchasing practices and circular design \u2013 to establish a route towards a net-positive<sup>\u00a0(1)<\/sup>\u00a0fashion industry.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The new Consultation will be a multi-stakeholder project led by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalfashionagenda.org\/\">GFA<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; a non-profit organisation that fosters industry collaboration on sustainability in fashion to accelerate impact \u2013 and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/\">UNEP<\/a>, who will be drawing on the expertise of the broader network of the United Nations throughout the process. Together, GFA and UNEP are inviting stakeholders and partners from across the global value chain including brands, retailers, NGOs, manufacturers, data providers, innovators, intergovernmental organizations, policy makers, and more to share their insights on the performance indicators and milestones that the industry must strive to meet, and importantly to gauge what tools and support are needed by these actors to take action.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The fashion and textiles industry is responsible for some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/explore\/fashion-and-the-circular-economy\">300 million jobs globally<\/a>, which support vital livelihoods,\u00a0 but also creates significant social and labour risks for workers. Meanwhile, if the fashion industry continues its current trajectory, it will fall short of the decarbonisation targets required to conform with the UNFCCC\u2019s 1.5-degree pathway by 50%<sup>\u00a0(2)<\/sup>. The fashion value chain also has a significant impact on ecosystems through land use, resource use and through pollution. Progress demands a holistic route in order to respect planetary sustainability, provide dignified work and protect the human rights of these many millions of people and their communities.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">UNEP\u2019s upcoming report,\u00a0<em>Sustainability and Circularity in the Textile Value Chain: A global roadmap<\/em>\u00a0and Global Fashion Agenda\u2019s<em>\u00a0<\/em>recent<em>\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/globalfashionagenda.org\/the-gfa-monitor\/\"><em>GFA Monitor<\/em><\/a>\u00a0report set out the priorities and actions all key stakeholders can take towards transformation. However, this transformation will require stakeholders to work together towards common targets that will reduce fashion\u2019s impact and create positive social and environmental contributions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWe know that addressing the complex matrix of environmental and social issues prevalent in the fashion industry can feel insurmountable \u2013 especially when acting in isolation \u2013 which is why we at Global Fashion Agenda recognize the unparalleled value of collaboration. We are delighted to be working with UNEP and to capture the broader industry\u2019s direction for targets that will accelerate the fashion industry forward, united in its purpose for a net positive industry,\u201d said Federica Marchionni, CEO, Global Fashion Agenda.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Through the consultation, the organizations intend to provide clarity and drive accountability by concluding a range of consistent, measurable, monitored, and complete goals, so that the industry is able to understand the current state of progress, the areas that must be focused on to accelerate impact and the timeframe to do so.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cAddressing climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss requires a collaborative and holistic approach. Together with partners within the United Nations and beyond, UNEP works to ensure a just and effective transition to circularity in which all stakeholders participate.
