{"id":79328,"date":"2022-08-03T20:23:58","date_gmt":"2022-08-03T18:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/?p=79328"},"modified":"2022-08-03T20:23:58","modified_gmt":"2022-08-03T18:23:58","slug":"unep-two-of-us-largest-reservoirs-at-dangerously-low-levels-over-climate-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csregypt.com\/en\/unep-two-of-us-largest-reservoirs-at-dangerously-low-levels-over-climate-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"UNEP: Two of US\u2019 largest reservoirs at dangerously low levels over climate crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csregypt.com\/en\/unep-to-join-cop27-calls-for-mobilizing-financing-for-climate-action\/\"> United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)<\/a> cautioned that two of the largest reservoirs in the US are at dangerously low levels due to the climate crisis and overconsumption of water, which could affect water and electricity supply for millions in six western states and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Lake Mead and Lake Powell are currently at their lowest levels ever and are at risk of reaching\u00a0\u201cdead pool status\u201d, meaning that the water in the dams would be so low it could no longer flow downstream and power hydroelectric power stations.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0\u201cThe conditions in the American west, which we&#8217;re seeing around the Colorado River basin, have been so dry for more than 20 years that\u00a0we&#8217;re no longer speaking of a drought<strong>,<\/strong>\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/climate-dries-american-west-faces-power-and-water-shortages-experts-warn\">said<\/a>\u00a0Lis Mullin Bernhardt, an ecosystems expert at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/\">UNEP<\/a>. \u201cWe refer to it as \u2018aridification\u2019 &#8211; a new very dry normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Lake Mead, located in Nevada and Arizona, was created in the 1930s by the construction of the Hoover Dam on the Colorado River. It is the largest artificial body of water in the US.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Lake Powell, located in Utah and Arizona, is the second largest and was created in the 1960s with the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">The reservoirs provide water and electricity to tens of millions of people in the states of Nevada, Arizona, California, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico, and in Mexico, as well as irrigation water for agriculture.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Experts warn that as the crisis deepens, water cuts will need to be introduced,\u00a0but may not be enough.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cWhile regulating and managing water supply and demand are essential in both the short and long term,\u00a0climate change is at the heart of this issue,\u201d said Maria Morgado, UNEP\u2019s Ecosystems Officer in North America. \u201cIn the long term we need to\u00a0address the root causes of climate change as well as water demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) cautioned that two of the largest reservoirs in the US are at dangerously low levels due to the climate crisis and overconsumption of water, which could affect water and electricity supply for millions in six western states and Mexico.
