Amazon<\/a> has donated more than $8 million since 2018 to support tens of thousands of students through the Right Now Needs Fund, which the company created to support all 106 schools in the Seattle Public Schools district and all 29 schools in the Bellevue School District.<\/p>\n

On May 3, Amazon announced<\/a>\u00a0a new\u00a0$2.2 million\u00a0donation to support the immediate needs of thousands of students from underserved communities in the\u00a0Puget Sound\u00a0region through the\u00a0Right Now Needs Fund. The Fund, created by\u00a0Amazon\u00a0in 2018 in partnership with the nonprofits\u00a0Alliance for Education<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Bellevue LifeSpring<\/a>, helps address students\u2019 basic and immediate needs like food, shelter, clothing, and school supplies so students arrive at school prepared to learn. The donation will support all 106 schools within the\u00a0Seattle Public Schools\u00a0district and all 29 schools in the\u00a0Bellevue School District.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany local families in underserved communities are feeling the impact of surging food and housing prices, and they\u2019re making tough sacrifices to meet their immediate needs. We are determined to help by funding meals, shelter, clothing, school supplies, and other basic needs so kids can be successful students,\u201d said\u00a0David Zapolsky,\u00a0Amazon\u00a0general counsel and senior vice president, and\u00a0Alliance for Education\u00a0board member. \u201cThe Right Now Needs Fund helps our nonprofit partners and schools quickly identify and eliminate barriers to learning for students across the\u00a0Puget Sound\u00a0region, and we\u2019re committed to continue supporting their work as one piece of our broader efforts to help our neighbors throughout the region.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amazon\u2019s donation includes\u00a0$1.4 million\u00a0to the\u00a0Alliance for Education\u00a0to help identify and close opportunity gaps for local students and families at all of Seattle Public Schools\u2019 106 schools. Since the Fund was created with the\u00a0Alliance for Education\u00a0in 2018, donations have supported more than 38,000 requests for student support, including helping to cover costs for rent and utilities, food, clothing, and other basic needs.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmazon has been a tremendous partner to our\u00a0Seattle Public Schools\u00a0school community,\u201d said Dr.\u00a0Brent Jones, superintendent of\u00a0Seattle Public Schools. \u201cThroughout the life of our collaboration, they have demonstrated time and again that they are committed to expanding resources and providing immediate and tangible solutions for\u00a0Seattle Public Schools\u00a0students and families. We extend our gratitude and heartfelt thanks to\u00a0Amazon\u00a0and look forward to an even greater partnership in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amazon\u00a0also donated\u00a0$700,000\u00a0in cash and\u00a0$150,000\u00a0in\u00a0Amazon\u00a0Gift Cards to Bellevue LifeSpring to support all 29 schools in the\u00a0Bellevue School District. Bellevue LifeSpring supports nearly 4,000 underserved students enrolled in the\u00a0Bellevue School District\u00a0and their families. Since the Fund was created with Bellevue LifeSpring in 2020, there have been more than 15,000 instances of student support, including issuing more than 5,400 food vouchers for students, ensuring 178 students remained in their homes, and providing clothing for 666 students.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur colleagues are working with students and families during these incredibly tough times, and many of the families need support from the\u00a0Right Now Needs Fund,\u201d said\u00a0Julie Bronson, family engagement and preschool coordinator at the\u00a0Bellevue School District. \u201cThe challenges are wide-ranging, from food and clothing needs to help with housing while facing financial challenges and other emergencies. We are very grateful for the support from\u00a0Amazon\u00a0and our partnership with both the\u00a0Amazon\u00a0and Bellevue LifeSpring teams because it ensures a quick response so that no child goes without basic supports that we all deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

School-based staff within the districts work with students and families to identify needs and submit requests for financial assistance through their respective nonprofit partner. In addition, any school community member can request assistance if they notice a specific student need. To date, every school within\u00a0Seattle Public Schools\u00a0and the\u00a0Bellevue School District\u00a0has used the\u00a0Right Now Need Fund\u00a0to help students.<\/p>\n

Since launching the first\u00a0Right Now Needs Fund\u00a0in\u00a0Seattle\u00a0in 2018,\u00a0Amazon\u00a0has donated more than\u00a0$8 million\u00a0to provide support across all 106 schools within\u00a0Seattle Public Schools\u00a0and all 29 schools in the\u00a0Bellevue School District. Combined, the donations have supported more than 55,000 requests for support\u2014from clothing to hygiene products to school supplies\u2014 for students and their families. In addition to the\u00a0Right Now Needs Fund\u00a0donations,\u00a0Amazon\u00a0has donated 9,000 laptops and devices to\u00a0Seattle Public Schools\u00a0for remote learning.\u00a0Amazon\u00a0also delivered more than 1 million school meals to\u00a0Seattle Public Schools\u00a0students during the pandemic, to help ensure that students who rely on school meals had access to food while learning remotely, and donated\u00a0$1 million\u00a0to the City of Bellevue\u2019s Health and\u00a0Human Services Fund\u00a0to support local families in need who were disproportionately affected by COVID-19.<\/p>\n
