Thirty six Egyptian universities were listed on the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for 202<\/a>2 – which cover institutions from over 100 countries offering dedicated courses on the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n

Aswan University came at the top of Egyptian universities on the list as it ranked no 67.<\/p>\n

The list also included Ain Shams University, Cairo University, Alexandria University and the American University in Cairo.<\/p>\n

The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport was also on the list as well as Assiut University, Benha University, and the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST).<\/p>\n

The list also comprised Kafr El Sheikh University, Mansoura University, Suez Canal University, Tanta University, and\u00a0 Damietta University.<\/p>\n

The list also included Future University in Egypt, Misr International University, Misr University for Science and Technology, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 October 6 University, Pharos University, Zagazig University, Al-Azhar University, Badr University in Cairo (BUC), Beni-Suef University, Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development and Helwan University.<\/p>\n

Menoufia University was also included on the list alongside October University for Modern Sciences and Arts (MSA),Port Said University, Damanhour University, Deraya University, and the Egyptian Russian University.<\/p>\n

The list also included Fayoum University, Minia University, Nile University, South Valley University, and Zewail City of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n

About the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for 2022:<\/strong><\/p>\n

More than 1,250 universities globally have dedicated education programs that address sustainability, data from the Times Higher Education<\/em> Impact Rankings reveal.<\/p>\n

The institutions offering full degree programs or elective courses that focus specifically on sustainability and the United Nations\u2019 Sustainable Development Goals span 105 countries, from Aalborg University<\/a> in Denmark to Zonguldak B\u00fclent Ecevit University<\/a> in Turkey. The indicator is a new metric<\/a> in the 2022 edition of the Impact Rankings<\/a> for SDG\u00a017 (partnerships for the goals)<\/a>, which looks at the broader ways in which universities support the SDGs through collaboration with other countries, promotion of best practices and publication of\u00a0data. Previously, universities were asked only if they had \u201ca\u00a0commitment to meaningful education around the SDGs across the university\u201d.<\/p>\n

In total, 1,256 universities said they offered such courses, which is 87\u00a0percent of institutions that submitted data on SDG\u00a017. Universities receive full points for this metric if they provide solid public evidence of the courses they provide.<\/p>\n

The country with the highest number of institutions receiving full points for the metric is the UK; its tally of 52 accounts for 98\u00a0percent of UK\u00a0universities participating in the table.<\/p>\n

All 24 Canadian universities that participated in the ranking for SDG\u00a017, which also measures research publications that relate to the SDGs, received full points for courses on the SDGs. Similarly, all 10\u00a0universities participating from Ireland, all eight from New Zealand, all seven from Germany and all five from Sweden offer SDG\u00a0courses.<\/p>\n

Japan has the second highest total number of universities receiving full points for running courses, 43 \u2013 but this makes up only 56\u00a0percent of Japanese institutions that took part in the ranking for SDG\u00a017. The\u00a0US has the third highest figure, 39, which accounts for 91 per cent of American universities participating. There are 29\u00a0Indian universities receiving full points for teaching courses on the goals, but this is less than half the total taking part in the ranking.<\/p>\n

Some universities offer non-accredited short courses on the SDGs, while others offer full degrees in sustainable development.<\/p>\n

The University of Liverpool<\/a> is joint top of the table for SDG\u00a017. Gavin Brown, pro vice-chancellor for education at the institution, said Liverpool had mapped its existing education provision to the SDGs, and had developed additional courses and modules linked to sustainability.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are committed to developing our students with the skills and knowledge they need to become agents for change in the world,\u201d he said. \u201cThe UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals provide an important focus on the global challenges we face, and our students and alumni have the passion and talent necessary to make a\u00a0difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

The University of Newcastle<\/a> in Australia is ranked fourth for SDG\u00a017. It\u00a0offers 11\u00a0degrees focused specifically on sustainability, ranging from a\u00a0bachelor\u2019s in coastal and marine science to a\u00a0master\u2019s in environmental management and sustainability. All its degrees in engineering, science, the built environment, law and business also cover sustainability.<\/p>\n

Mark Hoffman, Newcastle\u2019s deputy vice-chancellor (academic), said sustainability was \u201cat the heart\u201d of the university\u2019s core values and strategic priorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an organization, we are committed to creating a better and fairer future, and we want our research and teaching to benefit all our communities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cUniversities have a responsibility to use their research, education and teaching capabilities to ensure we create a sustainable future.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year, 1,524 universities were ranked in one or more of the Impact Rankings tables<\/a>, up from\u00a01,239 in\u00a02021. To\u00a0feature in the overall ranking<\/a>, universities must submit data on SDG 17 and at least three other SDGs of their choosing.<\/p>\n
